It's in my top 5.

I just never have the disposable income when one pops up for sale. I'm hoping with the new interest in more boutique-ish, low gain amps that Mesa will bring it back

yeah, the blue angel looks like a sweet ticket.

Re: He Shoots...he Scores!!!!

I should take back my statement of it being lo-gain ... I believe it did have a preamp setup similar to a cascading gain setup. (Last time I got to fiddle with one of these was 5-6 years ago) It seemed to excell more in the area of clean at the edge of breaking up.

Granted Gretsky fan has 2 of these now so he should have a better feel for the amp than I (or am I thinking of Artie as having one). All I know is that I was blown away and thought "man I gotta get me one of these"

Re: He Shoots...he Scores!!!!

I think the Blue Angel is about the only Mesa that has really looked attractive to me over the years. And, of course, they don't make them any longer. :(

I doubt they'll bring it back...I think the new Lonestar Special is kind of picking up where the Blue Angel & the Maverick left off. Granted, it's just running EL84s, but the 5-15-30watt switch sounded super cool & the reverb control for both channels was something I liked.

The thing I like about the Blue Angel is the Progressive Linkage....which gives you the option of different power tubes at different output for a different tone, but you can combine them for the best of both worlds.

The 6V6s (I actually use 6L6s) run at 15watts for a super warm Fendery tone, but like most Fenders, if pushed too hard, they get kind of flubby.

The EL84s run at 33watts & gives a tighter, more aggressive & brighter tone ala VOX...but it seems they aren't as warm as the 6V6 & can sound kind of thin or brittle.

But when you combine them (Mesa calls it "Simul Link"), @ 38watts, the EL84s add a tightness & attack to the 6V6s & the 6V6s add more bass response & warmth to the EL84s.

It's a great amp for classic rock/blues/jazz/country.....and yes, if you push the EL84s just right, it can rock a pretty mean British Rock type of gain. Flip on the Fat switch & use a bridge humbucker & it'll get pretty gainy. It's not for the metal guys or high gain users......but it likes pedals enough if you wanted that option.

And last but not least.....THE REVERB ! The spring reverb is just superb...warm, lovely, lush.....one of the best I've ever heard, not that I'm an expert, but it's damn fine!!!

I've said it before & I'll say it again DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE DUAL RECTIFIER EMBLEM ON THE FRONT! This is NOT what you would think a Mesa would sound like!

sounds cool man...i've always wanted to try out one of those!!! sounds like it's right up my alley?!

i take it you wanted the head to save room!?

Re: He Shoots...he Scores!!!!

Yeah, the room factor, more transportable, easier to run with different cabs etc etc....the usual head over combo reasons.

PLUS....someone wanted my 4x10 & I told him not until I can find a head!

SO....it's basically already paid more; probably make some money as the combo is worth more.

Re: He Shoots...he Scores!!!!

911 must pay pretty damn well down there in South Florida.....I might need to look into a career change.

Nice score bro!

Re: He Shoots...he Scores!!!!

What color is your new head. I recently called boogie and found out I could get a new head cabinet for the blue angel, with the original blue tolex from the early 90's. I ordered it and a short faceplate and converted my 4x10 to a head. It's really nice. The combo sounded really good, but I had started missing that low mid oomph from 12" speakers, and you really have to play those 10" alnicos loud to get the warmth they are known for.

Re: He Shoots...he Scores!!!!

It's black w/the wheat front....both of them are......how much did that run ya? Hot Grits has an original blue one.

You're right, the 4x10 can get pretty loud....I've run it thru my Weber MASS & it still sounds pretty good; no tone loss & you can crank it pretty well.

I'm gonna run it thru a 2x12 cab until I can get some more money to get 4x10s...I might just like that!

The Matchless sound pretty damn good thru the MASS too!!!

Re: He Shoots...he Scores!!!!

The cabinet was about $300 with the shorter faceplate (Necessary if you are converting a 4x10). They seemed very confused on the pricing. The price for the black on black was $250, blue w/tan( what I got) was $248, and Black w/ tan was $499. Kinda weird. It took a month and a half to build it, and when it was done they had lost all my info except my name and phone number, but it turned out ok. All the cabinets come with the reverb tank installed.
