Looking to get a heads stock tuner that works for electric and acoustic guitar any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Head stock tuner

Yep. Snark. When I play out, I've got one on each of my guitars. I'm selling my other tuners. Gotta couple of Boss tuners brand new in the box I'd like to part with or trade. The Snark's that good.

Re: Head stock tuner

The red Snark is excellent. I love mine. As Andrew says, they are somewhat fragile - but only if you sit or stand on them! They are cheap enough that you can afford to keep a spare.

Re: Head stock tuner

I use a red Snark as well. The only downside is, if you play with a drummer, he will make it difficult to tune. The Snark senses vibrations in the headstock, so if your drummer is beating on his set while you tune, it will fluctuate a bunch.

You need to train your drummer with a different tool. I find it helpful upside the head with a stern "I am tunning my guitar!"

When he wakes up he will be more considerate.

My dog had a bit of a chew on my black snark. Still works prefectly.

Re: Head stock tuner

The peterson one is the fastest and most sensetive that ive tried...but the planet waves micro is so cool cos its tiny, and you can leave it on your headstock 24/7. Plus ppl can bbarely see that a tuner is attached.

Re: Head stock tuner

Is the Peterson the strobe one? I have a friend that has that one, and I don't like it much. I definitely prefer the snark.

I have a pedal tuner in my rig, so for me it's not a big deal in the band. My g/f was constantly telling our old drummer to STFU so she could tune, though.

Re: Head stock tuner

I got a snark recently purely on salesman recommendation and I love it. Another +1 for snark.

Re: Head stock tuner

Just to add. I have 3 clip on tuners. 2 Snarks and 1 Samson tuner. For me, this is how I rank them:

Black Snark > Samson CT20 > Red Snark

The Samson is faster and feels more durable than the red snark. The only downside I saw was that when I opened the battery cover, there was a mark on the PCB that read "Cherub XXXXXX" so I'm thinking they use the Cherub PCBs and rehouse it to be sold as Samson.

The black snark is absolutely wonderful. Tight and accurate. Faster response than the Samson CT20.

Another one you should look at would be the GoGo Tuner. http://www.gogotuners.net/

Re: Head stock tuner

Seeing so many people pitching the black snark surprises me. Our lead singer got one after loosing his red snark, and none of us like it as much as the red ones.

Just got a Korg :

Upside :

So good I got two . Small and reversible so you can hide it under the headstock behind it so it's not seen .

To get the reverse reading ( upside down from the regular view ) press the switch and hold for 10 seconds and viola !

As far as accurate , I have two other tuners in my DAW GNX4 Digitech

& my Roland GR33 guitar synthesizer module

and it's right up there with them .

Really cool to be able to tune an acoustic with everyone else playing loudly and not have any affect on the tuner's performance , a plus 1 on the cheapie KORG @ $19.95 .

Down side - -

Fragile over all ( but still sturdy ) wonder if I sit on it one night and poof .

¡ Damn thing is easy to loose sight of it's sooooooo small :) !

Easy All :

Re: Head stock tuner

I too have a black Snark and it works well with my electrics and acoustic. Although not as accurate as my board tuners it's a great tool and for such little money!

Re: Head stock tuner

I like the Snarks, but use the Planet Waves ones. The regular and mini. They don't look as much like a bobble head on the end of my guitar. You don't notice them as much.

As for pedal tuners, I LOVE my new GoGo Pedal Tuner. The huge display is so easy to see. I'd use their clip on tuner, but I don't want something orange hanging on the end of the headstock.
