Headphones for Mesa V-Twin

I need to get some really good headphones for my Mesa V-Twin. The owners manual says the better the headphones the better the sound. I'm willing to pay up to $100 for a pair. But I don't want to get some that take away from the tone, if thats possible.

Any suggestions? I was gonna cruise Radio Shack on my way to GC to find a pair.

Sennheiser PX-100's are the best sounding headphones under 100, and the best sounding headphones of a decent size, as far as I'm concerned. Just stay away from the HD280's GC will try to sell you - they're only good for isolation, the mix is totally inaccurate.

Sennheiser PX-100's are the best sounding headphones under 100, and the best sounding headphones of a decent size, as far as I'm concerned. Just stay away from the HD280's GC will try to sell you - they're only good for isolation, the mix is totally inaccurate.

Thanks Jeff, I was looking at the Sennheiser HD205's for $40 and HD 212's for $60. I couldn't find any PX-100's. There's also a pair of Sony's for $40 that look decent.

The Sennheiser HD280 headphones are some of the best I've ever heard. They are really popular with DJs and remixers also. They were my top choice when searching for hps for my DJ rig, but I thought the Pioneer HDJ-1000 headphones would be better for showing off. The Pioneers are awesome, but I still feel the HD280 give a more flat EQ response, which is better for fine EQing in the studio. The Pioneers I have can be cranked up and placed on your desk or bed, and they sound perfect without distorting. There are 2 different Sony headphone models from Sony in your price range, which are also really popular.

If you could get the extra $50, the HD580s are great (I guess audiophile grade), although they are loud to the outside world. Then again, I haven't tried the others.

This may sound weird, but I wouldn't go for high end headphones for your guitar playing! I think you're better off with more affordable phones with a somewhat more limited frequency range and not as flat a frequency curve as high end hifi headphones. Why? Because somehow the limited range will get you a bit closer to the guitar speaker tone. Don't expect miracles from the analog speaker simulation in the V-twin. It will allow high end fizz that normal guitar speakers can't reproduce to travel through, and an honest, high end hifi headphone will clearly reproduce this. Cheaper headphones will reduce this influence, and may provide a more pleasing guitar tone, is my experience. My main headphones are the AKG K240 Studio, but for my guitar playing I prefer a cheap Philips HD200.

That's possible, but I use my Pioneer DJ headphones with my DJ rig, bass amp, ToneLab, and Korg AX1B, and it always sounds good to me. Especially with the ToneLab because I can hear more accurately the nuances of the various amp models and cab sims.

Thats what I've been learning. I'm looking at a $40 pair with no bells or whistles. Just something I can use to jam with when my 2yr old is sleeping at night.

For what you need and your price range, I would just pick any Sony headphones you find which match your preferences. Their whole spectrum of hps is reliable and of good sound quality.
