Headrush Review

Having had my share of floor effects units through the years, I was curious about the Headrush, and picked one up recently, mint for $650. Wow is all I can say! What an incredibly evolved, and impressive piece of technology. First, this thing is huge, metal housing, very heavy, huge LCD touch screen, everything about it screams quality, switches, lights, trim, everything is meaty and top tier. The big touch screen makes it so easy to navigate presets and functions you really don't even have to read the manual, and the sounds.....are just beautiful. Most effects units/modelers just don't really sound like tube amps, even if they sound very cool in their own right. Like my HD500X that I just sold, very nice piece of gear, sounds really cool, very well built, a very nice unit, but it's nowhere the league of a Headrush. The HD500X is a very nice unit, but you just aren't going to quite mistake it for a tube amp, the Headrush you will. The tones are so tasteful and organic, it's just so right. Of course, the Eleven rack, which these tones are based on, had very nice, organic amp sims, so its no surprise. Having had floor modelers forever, I've seen them evolve since 1990ish (still have my Digitech RP1 which was the Headrush of it's day), and this Headrush is the pinnacle of the journey, the Bugatti Veyron in a sea of Corvettes. Corvettes are awesome, but the Veyron is just another cut above....which is what this Headrush is. If you have a spare $600ish laying around and you enjoy the incredible versatility of floor modelers, pick up a Headrush, it will knock your socks off it's so good. When Tracii Guns said he recorded the entire recent LA Guns album only on a Headrush, and raved about it, I knew I had to get one, and he was right. I have never played a modeler and thought I no longer need tube amps, but that's the thought I had playing the Headrush, it's that good. Honestly, for $600 or $650 for a clean example, it's laughably cheap for what you are getting, a big gorgeous, meaty, beautiful sounding unit that has unparalleled versatility. If you check out a Headrush firsthand, you will be reaching for your wallet.....it's that good!

Thanks for the review! I haven't been keeping up with the Headrush, although I read a lot about it when it came out. How is the software support? Do they update it often?

I’ve heard this unit live a few times. The tones the players got were incredible. The lead player had the big unit with the treadle. The lead singer had the smaller one.

two guys i play with in different bands have the big headrush, one guy has a second as a backup. they sound good and both guys love em. if you need a lot of different tones, they are great. i usually have a drive pedal or two, maybe delay. its cool, but im very spoiled

"Powered by Eleven Rack"...already sounds awesome. I would expect one would need some really good studio speakers/monitors to get the most out of it?

Meh. Ymmv. Some people like studio speakers, some like guitar cabinet. Gotta experiment.

Awesome, I was very tempted to get one of these before I got my Kemper. I'm sure I would've been happy either way! One thing to keep in mind, if you ever connect to a PC via USB, be absolutely positive you disconnect the USB via Windows (right-click USB icon in system tray) before you unplug the Headrush!

yeah, i can usually read the one my buddy uses when i stand close to him on stage
