Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Epi & Hamer are about it for me. There are other headstocks I don't like but the guitars they're on have other reasons for me to not like 'em. ;)

Do mind Dean Vs.

I know the feeling. I've been looking for a V copy for a little bit now,and while the price is right and i like the rest of the look of the V i cannot stand the headstock.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

the heritage, hamer, EPI Elitist, James Tyler, G&L, Valley arts, burns usa

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I was almost gonna pull the trigger on a Dean Flying V...But the headstock?
I just couldn't fall in love with it. So I got a Epi. As far as the G&L goes...
Didn't Fender (The Co.) take legal action againist Ole' Leo? The 1st 3 years
The G&L headstock wasn't to bad. But then They had to change it to that
aweful Midevil looking thing?

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

This is an interesting read, since some of the smallest details throw us off!

I've always thought the G&L and ESP strat headstocks were classic enough to pass the test. Still, it's hard to look at a classic body, where the headstock is just WRONG!

I'm not sure what's better, a slight variation of a classic, or a completely original headstock.

Dean. I love some of their designs, but the big lame V headstocks look like crap to me.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I don't like small padles, like on Carvin's California Carved Top models. I love everything else about those guitars, but if you're gonna do a paddle-style headstock, please, at least make it reasonably wider than the nut width!

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

i use to hate teles just because the headstock looked like a wierd penis or something haha. It wasn't until i found out that they sounded awesome, that i could see past the phallic headstock and see them for their true tonal beauty.

Hamers are another one, just to weird for me.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

yeah i forgot, i'm not a fan of carvin 6 in line headstocks either...too bland.

i do like Jacksons and ESPs pointy headstocks though!

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I get turned off by pretty much anything that's pointy, but then again, pointy guitars really don't mesh well with my style anyway. ;)

The one that really bothers me si the Heritage headstock. I love everything about the guitars, but that headstock keeps me from really lusting after a Heritage. My loss, I guess. :burnout:

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I like every Gibson headstock except this one. It's from a 90's ES-336. I think straight string pull was the idea.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

You know what it is.....my style is primarily blues based, and pointy headstocks aren't any part of that. I know it sounds ridiculous, but the only style that Jackson or hockeystick headstocks look appropriate for is heavy metal. It's a very pigeon holed headstock style. Even more snobbish.....variants of Gibson and Fender just look like cheap immitations to me. Even if the body style is right, a watered down version of a classic just looks like a copy and nothing more. My Schecter tele is a better tele than the vast majority of Fenders, yet when I see it in the mirror, it just screams "not the real deal!"

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Agree with most above - Heritage, Anderson, Jackson, G&L and add to that Brian Moore and worst off, the Epi Elites.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

i was just surfin ebay... how could i forget the 80's BC RIch gunslinger headsocks

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

i hear ya GJ, i couldn't see you playing something like a pointy headstock jackson RR or something with all the other guitars you have. heck even that blue burst strat is a push for you to the dark side (that's why you should sell it to me...no, i'll never stop bugging you about that lol)...but seriously, that's why i guess i'm lucky in my music style that i play since it's a punk metal mix most times (or just one of the two styles) i can play anything from a tele to a jackson to a les paul to even a gibson dot for the punk stuff (bad gas for a black one now). like i think i said in my PM to you or was it another person...well anyway...being that i'm a graphic designer kinda sucks at times when it comes to guitars since i'm picky as hell with looks along with quality so i need cake and a big fork for me to spend cash hehe!

as for your schecter tele, again, i know what you mean there's a schecter tele i keep looking at but i can't get passed the headstock on it enough to buy it. although it's better than a G&L imo.

I have tried to get past the Dean "upside down flying V" design, but I just can't do it. A shame, as they make nice guitars. Reminds me of dudes who wear HUGE beltbuckles.

Don't like the Floyd Rose guitars headstocks, or Seinberger headless ones.

PRS and OLP seem to have headstocks that are too small.

Pointy headstocks are great, reverse headstocks are kickass (visions of Hendrix on his right-handed Strat), love the Gibson Flying V and Explorer, but seeing the headstock for a Les Paul Custom gives me chills.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I hate headless guitars and 3x3 tuning machines (except on Univox guitars and Gibson and Dean V's) and I hate Tele headstocks. Ever since i saw that Telecaster Deluxe with two humbuckers and a extra-big Strat headstock, I've wanted to build a Tele with a Strat neck :D

And you guys should stop hatin on the G&L headstock, it just looks like they weren't paying attention and sawed a little to the side while doing a normal Fender shape...

Some of the new Charvels have an awful headstock (that ugly strat knock-off).
Wayne's headstocks pretty ugly.
????

You´re surely talking abpout the discontinued Imports? All of the new ones have pointies (except the Limiteds, they´re for the most part "real" Stratheads).... ;)

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I really don't care, the headstock can be shaped like a banana, dildo, chicken, I don't care.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Upside-down headstocks break the deal for me. I can't stand them. They just look wrong to me.

I like the more classic-looking headstocks like Fender's, Gibson's, or Gretsch's. I don't typically like pointy or "evil-looking" headstocks like Jackson's or BC Rich's. I like Schecter's and the new ESP headstocks though. ESP's in particular are cool since they're like variations on the classic Gibson and Fender designs like the 6-in-line angular and 3-and-3 flag styles.
