HEAVIEST guitar tone

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

Im sorry, ive played through a 5150, Mesa Dual rect and a Jsx in the same room

Verdict was that.

5150 sounded the best to me (tight and focused with plenty of mid)

Dual rect had the fattest bottom end, sounded like the 5150 but had more gain, it didnt have quite the same tight mids that i liked about the 5150.

Jsx was sort of a muddy dual rect with less useable gain, at times a mix of inbetween a Rect and 5150 but not as good as either, really wasnt impressed with this amp in comparison.

So id stand by my word that a 5150/Rect combo = the heaviest.

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

The JSX doesn't just get Satch tones. It gets every bit as heavy, in fact much heavier than a Triple X or a 5150! If you've ever heard Crowbar or Machine Head or Cannible Corpse or Prong (Scorpio Rising) than you can imagine the heaviness and versatility I can get. If you haven't heard Crowbar, please do. Especially Broken Glass. That tone minus a little treble and that is my favorite tone on my amp and they play Mesa gear. The secret is the parametric. Get one and thank me later.

I was joking...thus the wink AND toothy grin. :D

I'm sure its a good amp, though I haven't really tried ANY of the higher gain PVs...

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

any amp with a parametric EQ infront of it suddenly becomes ridiculously heavy. That's why i said no eq's

take the EQ, leave the same settings, and plug it into a 5150, then tell me which one is heavier

yeah, that's what i thought

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

If we're talking a simple rig here then a Les Paul with a Warpig in the bridge through an Ashdown Fallen Angel 180 Watt head with an oversized Mesa Boogie closed back 4x12 cabinet would shake some serious balls. In my honest opinion if you take the tightness and grind of a 5150 with the thundering low end of a Dual Recto you get the Fallen Angel. While it won't be the same has having both amps, it is a very worthy candidate to get the best of both worlds in an affordable package.

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

i Have to disagree on the fallen angel 180, i had a good test on that amp, it seemed to have a decent ammount of gain (though nowhere near as much as a 5150 or recto), it seemed a fairly bright amp with a tight bottom end, i found it had more of a marshall tone though and was suited more to rock sounds, certainly didnt have the bottom end of either a recto or 5150, i liked the amp, but the last thing id call it is a heavy sounding amp.

To me its an amp that can do heavy and can do metal but it isnt what it does best.

I live in the uk, the Ashdown fallen angel 180 is £800, thats more expensive than the rrp on a 6505 (5150mk1), The peavey valveking head shakes some serious balls at almost 1/3 of the price.

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

its kinda weird how uberschalls were only mentioned like 1 time & they're supposed to be like THE metal amp

You know, your amp through the right cabs and with, say, a Mesa V-Twin in front of it would be ridiculously heavy. :bigok:

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

yeah man, when i run it through the 6x12 with this modded bluesdriver i got (imagine a 5150 with a little less bass & a more rockin midrange) it's pretty friggin heavy

i can feel my pant legs blow a little bit, more people need to try eminence swamp thangs, seriously

hmm fair enough, to each his own. I'm a Mesa whore, but i just can't afford somethign like that, and when i played my Fallen Angel i was very pleased with the sound and the pricetag. When it is time to replace the tubes I am going to throw some Mesa 6L6's tubes in it and see how that sounds, as it comes stock with EL34's, which may contribute to its lack metalishness.

dude, dont get me wrong, when i played it i was very pleased with the sound, i told the other guitarist in my band to buy it (though he ended up getting a marshall jmp-1 and a 20/20 rack instead), i just dont think its as "heavy" or "high gain" or "metal" as say a 5150 or a Mesa rect..

Personally i wouldent buy a mesa, its not my thing, but they sure are fat heavy sounding amps, i love my 5150 though, not so long ago i was looking for something that could give me all i wanted sound wise (like the 5150 did) but i wanted better clean and more versitality, i never found the amp though, so im sticking with what i know works.

you can get a 5150 for less than a Ashdown fallen angel 180 (probably), and that will get you closer to a mesa sound (and better imo).

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

I say a TONE ZONE or EMG 81 equipped guitar into an ENGL POWERBALL

the Diezels are pretty brutal as well as the Bogner Uberschall

but my call is as listed above

Coheed and Cambria used those on their last cd (welcome home is probably the most powerful song i've probably ever heard) so i'd have to agree here.

or

GET A BASS PLAYER.
any shrill/ squeaky guitar will sound SO much better with a bass player + drums (assuming they can actually play).

Here in Canada a 6505 2x12 combo runs around 1500 bucks. I bought my Fallen Angel 2x12 combo for 1200. But you're right you can get a 6505 head for 1400 bucks, whereas the Angel 180 is like 2600 bucks, but you do have an extra set of power tubes, and 60 watts more headroom to play with (however there is no way i would need 180 tube watts). Its funny though, the 180 head is 2600, but the 60 watt head is like 850, that's a huge price drop just for 4 power tubes, i dunno. I also agree with you that the Fallen Angel does not have as much gain as a 5150 or Recto, but i don't like to swim in a pool of undefined gain either. With gain set to 8 and boost on the Angel has such a huge bottom end chunk that stays tight and "defined" with a touch of gain to spare. I suppose i could be giving a biased opinion because i own the amp, but its the best for "my" style, and i'm not trying to tell anyoen what to think. I apologize if i came across as rash

clips?

i've never heard like a brutally heavy sound come out of a powerball. High gain yes, but not real heavy
