HEAVIEST guitar tone

But this isnt about bassists, or thin tones

this whole thread is about the "heaviest" "Meatiest" "ballsiest" tone.

Yup.

And I'm saying that heavy, meaty, and ballsy tone has f*ck all to do with gear. It's all about technique, stylistic/stage presence, and volume.

If you can't make a guitar of any type and a 100w tube amp of any type sound heavy, then you shouldn't be trying to play heavy guitar.

IMO.

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

And as for "Heaviest";

An awesomely heavy death metal tone will sound thin and somewhat like buzzy pack of bees in a hard rock band, and a heavy hard rock band tone would sound like like muddy sh*t in a death metal band. The same goes for most other mixings....and thus is why I say heavy is relative.

That said, if you gave a black metal guitarist a typical low gain high volume Matamp/Sunn/Hiwatt doom style rig and he'll turn some knobs and rock out with a suitably heavy tone.

Same goes for a doom guitarist getting a black metal players rig. If the guy knows how to play heavy, he'll make it sound heavy. If he knows how to play really f*cking heavy, he'll make it sound really f*cking heavy.....no matter what you put in his hands provided it has the same volume he's accustomed to.

I wouldent sound "****ing Heavey" no matter how well i played through say my avt150 for metal, id sound "****ing muddy".

It has a lot to do with gear, because with high gain you dont need to "play heavy" you can play quite lightly and with a responsive enough guitar/amp still sound heavy as ****.

And as for heaviest.

you want to get the heaviest tone, if you can get that with a strat, well guess what, a heavier ballsier guitar will be even more so, therefore making the strat not the heaviest, making in this case technique irrelivant.

And i dont mean heavy as in lots of bass and treble with little mids, im not into that nonsense.

And to be honest i dont see how style and stage presence are going to make my tone any heavier :D.. "dressing up in spandex and spiking my hair gives me all the extra heavy brutal tone i need in my sound" i dont think so.

:)

1) I specifically said 100w tube amp....how you managed to pull AVT150 out of that statement I have no idea.

2) If you need to use gear/gain as a crutch that's your problem. Some of the heaviest guitar tones in history have been done on low gain tube rigs being driven to the edge of death.

You said gear means ****, thats my point, gear does not mean ****, it means half (or more) of the battle.

Low gain tube amps being driven to death are therefore highgain. a marshall 1959slp is low gain, but van halens tone isnt low gain (his 1959SLP tone is pretty high gain stuff), i dont think van halens tone is heavy either. :drive:

I get a heavy tone, i run my strat into my 5150 (lead channel 5 gain) then into a marshall 4x12, the actual sound isnt "that" high gain but its heavy, i do know though that its not the "heaviest".. you're making assumptions about me without even hearing me playing..

Heavy tone for me

Nevermore - The River Dragon has come
Arch Enemy - Nemesis
Arch Enemy - Leader of the rats/
Arch Enemy - We Will Rise
Nile - Cast down the Heretic
Nile - Lashed to the slave stick.
Machinehead - Bulldozer - Hell alive (live track)

There those bands you have a mix of

Marshall (tsl)
Mesa (dual rect)
Peavey (5150)
Krank (revolution one)

and possibly some other amps

You give those bands a 100w vintage valve amp, they probably would still sound good no doubt, but would they be as heavy? not even close.

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

when i think heavy.... my mind immediately goes to.... Celine Dion & Anastacia's ACDC cover, complete with air-guitar. Unbeatable! I think it was "you shook me all night long" Defines metal-heavy

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

Mesa Tripple rect
Les paul with a duncan full shredd
TS9
MXR Dyna comp

Use 13's and tune to B.

Maybe its a different kind of heavy than you're looking for, but that is what I would describe as heavy.

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

Seriously, I really think my tone is crushing as hell. Its my Schecter 006 Elite (obviously) with my Duncan distortion set through my Marshall Mg100dfx. It sounds corney maybe, but personally i think its the heaviest tone I've heard with the exception of a few bands maybe. No bs, no pedals, no nothing, just my guitar and my amp, just like satan intended. Wanna hear a ******n heavy band, www.myspace.com/tpog <----those guys are so heavy its a Joke, take a look at their gear list. But really, I love my tone and the only way I can describe it is crushing. Other than that, Greg Anderson's tone on Goatsnake's "Trampled Under Hoof" Cd is Damn near perfect IMO. Also check out "Dopesmoker" by Sleep. That Cd is INCREDIBLE and the mixing is perfect. Greg Anderson is the man.

Re: HEAVIEST guitar tone

Thinking of heavy tones, i watched a Slipknot live dvd called "disasterpeices" with a friend the other day and i must say, slipknot have one of the best and heaviest guitar sounds ive ever heard..

Apparently

Marshall Jmp-1
Mesa 90/90

+

Diezel VH4.

Warlock + Telecastery thing with Emg active pickups.
