Heavy top/Light Bottom

Jomo's Nimions
The typical deviation from a standard string set is light plain strings, heavy wound strings. I was reading about Wayne Krantz, and found he uses 11,13,17,24,32,38. I think Jimi used 10-38.

One problem I fight with my Strat is getting the plain strings warmer without making the wound strings too bassy and woofy. On my mandolin, I use a set with heavier than usual plain strings for the same reason.

Anybody here go heavier with the plain and lighter wound?

Re: Heavy top/Light Bottom

Personally I use 8-38s or 9-42s, but I understand your concept and it sounds very feasible to me. In theory it seems like a good way to really dial things in, but man I bet it has a strange feel initially until you get used to it.

Are you thinking about trying it? You'll prob have to combine 2 sets of strings to do it, or buy them individually.

I just restrung it with 11-52 today, but I'm gonna try it next time. Maybe something less drastic like 11-46.

Re: Heavy top/Light Bottom

Right on man, that seems a little more toward what you were working toward. I'm sure you will hear a difference if you're that "into" your sound already.

Re: Heavy top/Light Bottom

George Lynch used 11-42s, but that would feel strange to my fingers lol

Re: Heavy top/Light Bottom

Man, and here I am getting used to 9's after years of playing 10's, 11's, and 12's. I know Jimi was fond of such a mythical "heavy top, light bottom" set. You could just go with "super light top, light bottom" ala Billy Gibbons...

Re: Heavy top/Light Bottom

You have to remember Jimi had a reverse headstock, which changes the tension between the low and high strings, so what worked on his will not feel the same on yours.
