to RATHERDASHING'S question about getting into the studios as a pro guitarist.Tell me if you can do the following:1.Read any style of music placed on your music stand in the studio immediatelyi.e.RIGHT NOW(they don't let you take it home to pratice it) perfect the first time down,in perfect time-not dragging,or rushing?2.Make the music you are reading authentic to whatever genre the song is in?e.g. Can you play -for real-Rock,Progressive Rock,Funk,R&B,Urban Soul,Rap,Hip-Hop,Metal,Grunge,Alternative,Country music,Contemporary Country,Jazz,Jazz-Rock,Fusion,Classical guitar-fingerstyle,Latin music(bossa nova,bolero,samba,cha-cha,)Latino Rock,Waltze's(original Austrian to jazz waltz)Movie themes(anything goes from classical-STRAVINSKY,To avant garde symphony)?3.Do you play mandolin in the correct tuning?4.Do you play banjo-tenor,and five string -in the correct tuning?4.Do you believe that at 10AM for 8 to 12 hours that day ,you must record a movie,cd,without making more than 3 mistakes reading down the above mentioned styles? If you can do this-you are ready for the studios.
i have to disagree, i myself, and i know of many others, who do studio work, and cannot read a lick of music. haven't ever heard of the "3 mistake" rule either. i gotta say, if you can play relatively well and learn fairly qwik, any one has a shot at being a studio musician. it's something that depends alot on who hears you play.

Thanks Carmine! I have a lot of work to do! :)

I read an interview with Tommy Tedesco, and he said pretty much the same thing. Didn't mention the mandolin or any other instruments though. I've always wanted to try a mandolin.

No offence, my friend, but from where I sit Carmine's answer is a bit more credible. Although maybe the studios in Holly Pond, Alabama are different than those in New York. :)

Alan Holdsworth can't read music either. Tell me he's a bad guitarist.

actually some of the best guitarists can't read music. i think it makes thier style come out a little more because they are not playing what someone else has written.

Re: Hello from Studio jazz rock guitarist Carmine D'Amico

i think that for guitar, reading could be at many times an unneccesary luxury. If you're going to record at a studio, more likely than not, they'll already have your part in midi sequence form. The rest is simply learning it by ear.

Hellrider,I don't know where these studio musicians live.Yes,in Nashville,no one reads music. They use the chordal number system, but here in NY,and LA(I LIVED IN BOTH AREAS)if you can't read-FORGET BEING A STUDIO GUITARIST.They will laugh you right out of the back door of the studio. As far as Allan Holdsworth. He's a jazz player, not a studio guitarist(A FINE MUSICIAN)But backing up performers on a live studio session. Not to be RUDE,but you don't know your xss from your bxxls about the music industry.GROW UP,AND LEARN TO READ LIKE A MAN.GOOD LUCK,XSSHXXLE,and take SEA FOAMER,AND OTHER JEXKOXXS WITH YOU down the MUSICAL TOILLET BOWL!!!!!!!!!!! PS,I TRIED BEING UNDERSTANDING of your MORONIC problems.WHY DON'T YOU SEE A SHRINK.YOU TRULY ARE A STUPID BXXTXRD!!!!!!!!!I was right the first time GOODBYE TO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE.I Carmine D'Amico will never LOWER MYSELF,AND POST HERE FOR AS LONG AS I CAN HOLD A PICK IN MY HANDS,AND TALK TO MORONS ON THIS FORUM/

I'm sure with an attitude like that, people will line up around the block to hire you ;)

In all seriousness, I see your point Carmine. Reading is a very useful skill to have because you can pick up any kind of sheet music from any instrument and apply it to guitar.

You don't have to list all the different genres you can play. It looks far too boastful. Most people probably have a common understanding that in order for one to do session work with artists, you must be well adept with a variety of musical genres.

This is really getting lame. It's actually pretty far past that now. I see Evan watching it, hopefully it gets shut down soon.
