Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

Hello all, I need some help.

I really love the mini-humbucker tone but I'm afraid if the tone isn't perfect, I'm limited in changing them out. So my thought was a H/mini/mini combo. The guitar will probably a warmoth LP double cut, mahogany/mahongany neck.

My warmoth strat is an alien of sorts with a PG+/vintage rails/lil 59

I want the guitar for mainly solid rhythm, blues, jazz, fusion, rock, versatility is key, not volume!

you could go with a combo like i am thinking about. either a custom 5 or jb bridge with a push pull pot and a p-90 in the neck.

Re: Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

I have a JB/jazz combo in another guitar and quite frankly the JB has too much output for me......just to clarify are the routes for a mini-humbucker and a P-90 the same????

I'll be using a Gibson mini at the neck of my Alleykat and a Burstbucker 3 at the bridge. I think that this will work for the sounds you want (incidentally it's what I want as well).

BTW, P90's will fit into a mini humbucker rout, but they have a different mounting design.

I think Gidge means single coil-size humbucker....

Gidge:

Just to clarify, when you say "mini-humbucker," are you talking about something like this?

Or this?

Or something else altogether?

Re: Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

No, I want the mini HB tone, I have single coil sized HB's in my warmoth strat which I love, but they don't have the mid-range sound I'm looking for. So if I have my next project guitar routed for mini HB's, I could also interchange a P-90 or a p-90 stack if I chose to??

Re: Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

Yes, that replacement is done all the time, but mostly in the other direction... ;)

Re: Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

hmm get some lindy fralin 42's or there new 3+3. They are both going in to my 72 tele when i get it :)

I have a similar set up in my Alleykat: neck mini, middle mini and bridge full size humbucker.

The routing that you are describing is the P-90 routing, using the Les Paul Deluxe style P-90 to mini HB mounting ring. You need this if you want to be able to change from mini back to P-90.

That said, I don't think that two rounded p-90 style rings will look good next to a rectangular full size humbucker mounting ring.

I'd suggest the Epiphone mini humbucker rings, which are also retangular, and look better next to a full size humbucker. That's what you get in the Epiphone Alleykat. The down side is that the routing to use these pickup rings is smaller than P-90 routing and would not be compatible with P-90 pickups.

You would also have to be very clear with Warmouth about the routing that you need for the pickups and rings. They may not be familiar with the Epi mounting rings. I think the Epi rings are only available through Gibson. I had my guitar modified to add a middle mini. The tech had to order the part from Gibson, and it took a while to get.

Re: Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

Thanks for the info, so just to make sure I got this right.........

I can order my body with P-90 pickup routes and use the les paul deluxe mounting rings, available at guitarpartsresource.com, and switch rather easily between the p-90 or mini-HB?? Or do something like a p-90 bridge and mini-hb neck (like p-90 stack/seymourized mini)

Re: Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

Overall sounds like you have it, but if you are talking about the p90 hum reducing stack, keep in mind that it's a deeper rout than a p90 or mini-hum need-

Re: Help a sister out! Thinking of Hb/miniHB combo

So the P90 stacks are deeper than the minis, and there are a few
different mounting systems. Just for completeness, do the Dimarzio
mini/P90 replacements also have different lengths, widths, etc???

You should end up with a unique tone, sister.
