Help about output of humbuckers?

Hi, I've an important question.
I'm using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III (40watt tube amp) and I found out that with my bridge pickup (SD Invader SH-8) the amp in clean channel breaks up too early. If I split the Invader the sound isn't great and I need to play even in clean. The Invader has too much output but I cannot understand how much.
Knows someone how much output Invader has? I red that DiMarzio puts a 'output' number near the pickups.
I wonder if Custom SH-5 (NOT Custom 5) has more output than Invader, or similar, or less?
And, last question, does Invader has much more output than a DiMarzio Crunch Lab?
I need a good pickup for metal-styles solos, good cleans and not high output (I hate when I need clean and my amp breaks up..) so Custom SH-5 or Crunch Lab are the better choises for me.. I only need to know if they are far far far far away from Invader's output or they are 'closer so they let your amp breaks up like the Invader does'..
Sorry my bad English, I'm Italian!
Regards
Andree

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

The Invader is one of the highest output pickups Duncan makes. The Custom seems like a good choice for what you want and has MUCH less output than the Invader, while still sounding clean when you need it to. The Custom Custom might also work for you because it has even less output than the Custom, and a warmer tone that sounds great for solos in any genre.

Thanks for the fast reply! When you write 'Custom Custom' do you mean 'TB 11'?
Does both (Crunch Lab and Custom Custom) sound good on solos? (I'm using a Sustainiac Stealth Pro on neck pickup so I need to know if Crunc Lab and Custom works well in metal solos)

P.s difference in output between Crunch Lab and SH-5 Custom??
Thanks again! ;)

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

Both do very well for solos yes. And I do mean the tb-11. John Petrucci had a hand in designing the Crunch Lab, and he is one hell of a great metal/prog lead guitar player. The Crunch Lab is pretty high output though. Both should work with your sustainiac neck pickup. All 3 mentioned are great for solos. Think
Van Halen-Custom Custom
Dream Theater-Crunch Lab

With the Custom in between.

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

what might "sound good on solos" is going to be up to you and your ears. for example, if you are talking about the Invader and the C5, I don't care of those but they might be great for what you want. if you could into a little more detail about your guitar and provide some examples of the sound you are after (i.e., what sorts of bands have the sounds you like/want?).

what it sounds like you need is something that will manage metal solos, but be able to manage a nice clean tone when split. been there myself. a lot of the high output models out there can still break up pretty easily when split. one way to address this would be to wire that switch to take it to parallel... which also has the advantage of not having the hum that a split wiring will have. so if you do like the Invader for everything except the split sound, try it in parallel before spending money on another pickup. it will only cost you a little time. and if it doesn't work, at least you know you tried.

So Crunch Lab has more output than Custom and Custom Custom??

The problem is that the Invader has not a really good clean tone.. Even when I split it isn't a good clean tone.. Crunch Lab and Custom SH-5 yes..
I love Avenged Sevenfold solos (for this reason I've put a Sustainiac and an Invader on my guitar), but I love the Petrucci's sound too.

P.S how to connect in parallel when I split?? Thanks :)

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

The Invader will have a totally different sound in parallel than it does in either series or split. It will sound much cleaner than series mode and yet have more "tone" than when split. Parallel mode will have about 30 - 40% less output than series mode.

Use this diagram to wire it to be either in series mode or parallel mode...

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

Hello and welcome to the Forum. What is the guitar you have now and it's specs?

I don't know which one is hotter between the Crunch Lab and Invader but I can tell your they are both hot but the Crunch Lab in my opinion has better cleans but not GREAT cleans. The Custom SH-5 could do what you want and I would also recommend the JB. Outside of Seymour Duncan offerings I would recommend one of the L-500 series from Bill Lawrence.

Thanks, and what if I have 1 volume and 1 tone (with split)? Thanks!

I have a Fender Showmaster H/S/S with Floyd Rose and 24 frets rosewood neck.
I will choose one between Crunch Lab or Custom SH-5.. But I don't know which is "hottest". I'd like choose the lower output between Crunch Lab or Custom SH-5..
Thanks again!

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

Thanks for the help! I've red that Custom works well for bridges like tune o matic, it's true??

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

What tuning and pedals are you using? Are you playing metal through a Hot Rod Deluxe with or without pedals? I'm going to assume with.. Just curious. Because maybe you don't need a high output pickup if you are using something like a Boss Metal blah blah or MetalMuff pedal.

Basically gain in a stomp box

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

I'm using a blackstar ht-distx (lot of gain). For SD Custom.. So it's not good for my guitar (floyd rose..)?
;(

You said you didn't like the split sound. I offered this (parallel) as an alternative to split. I assumed you knew how to wire a tone pot, but if I was wrong here is a diagram with the tonepot included...

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=1h_1v_1t_sp

But use a .022uf cap instead of the .047uf shown.

Since you already have the Invader installed, before you spend money on a new pup, try the parallel mod...it may just work out for you without putting out any more $$$.

Thank you very much, I will try this!

What about SH-5 with Floyd Rose bridge? :( for metal solos etc...

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

The SH-5 should fit the bill. It is high output enough to do metal, has a really good lead tone, is tight and focused under gain, yet is still low enough in output to clean up nicely.

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

If your guitar has a Floyd get the TB-5 version so the strings will line up with the poles correctly. If your guitar does not have a floyd then get the SH-5 version.

The only time to get the SH version is when you have an older USA Tune-o-matic bridge. Just about *every* guitar uses a TB spaced pickup these days.

Re: Help about output of humbuckers?

Yes I know the difference between SH and TB :)
Btw I've just tryied an Ibanez RG 270b with Crunch Lab in the bridge: horrible. It had only treble and no mids or bass. Only trebles :( I don't know if is my amp that doesn't loves Crunch Lab or is the wiring that my friend done on his Ibanez..
I think I will buy the Custom, hoping it's good for metal solos ;)
