Help an idiot out.

Re: Help an idiot out.

++ on the Tusq nut.
But please spend a little more and get a TusqXL - they made and pressed with permanent silicon. I can do a good job, taught myself, and work as well as a JBeck roller nut or any pro set up. Now, I pat myself on the back for having the nut work so well, however, behind the breakpoint of the string from the nut, the whole thing looks like the worst piece of s**t you have ever seen. I only had the last tool needed for the break point but had to use concrete construction tools to get me close enough. Usually, (I have 4 in use) they come cut really well and it is just a matter of shimming them.
Allen wrench, I needed a small one but can't drive so I decided to just cut one end of my bigger Allen wrench down with a very strong flat file. Ba-Boom, got it down to perfect in 15 minutes. Now I velcro each size I need on the back of my headstock.
Had a guy years ago make my high E taller on my nut with powdered bone and super glue. He's gone, who knows where, but I couldn't see the difference between his fix and my nut. But he did raise it and it was a thing of beauty. When the whole needed replacing is when I got the TusqXL. Talked to the owner of the product and gave me a free one for buying one. Great guy. He said if I did not like the free one, keep the one that I bought and get a refund from where I got it.

TUSQ XL is usually the one they sell at GC but it's all preference really. If you're using the trem a lot then the XL might be worth springing for but if you're just using a hardtail, it's not as vital to have a more slippery material. But I always go TUSQ XL because I can buy it in the stores which I prefer over ordering online.

Re: Help an idiot out.

That nut is DEFINITELY backwards. Just look at how the low E is raised so high, and the high e is sitting in the cavern made for the low E.

Re: Help an idiot out.

Johnny the Kid,
I bought the Tusq XL especially for my 2nd strat after buying my way overpriced JBeck W/Temolo.
I got my first TusqXL at GC. I liked it so much I have It on 2 different Strats and a roller nut on my 3rd Strat. I liked them so much I bought 4 more for my hard tails anyway. You are correct about the hard tails not needing the more expensive TusqXL but I had more spending money a few years ago so I thought, what the hell - when I get to play live it is more often outside so it is hard enough with the changes in temperature, why not go all out and get the best nut as it is also more temperature stable (the owner said that, and he had no reason to bring that up). 1 less thing to NOT worry about.
autologic-
The nut we see is the completely flat side. I have never seen a nut where the backside is not curved down visibly. The high E is so F'd up the B G, etc. Look like they fit ok. I get what you say but that E is so much NOT like the rest, I think it is the E that is broken or whatever happened to it.
Also, with the strings wound the proper way on the posts, the bigger strings are likely to sit in their slots much better. For these reasons I think the nut is not backwards. However, I would not bet over $20 bucks on it. So I am pretty sure I'm right, but only $20 bucks sure.

Re: Help an idiot out.

I had a buddy string my daphne strats low e reversed on the tuner

It snatched the nut off before it got to pitch

The nut in the image does appear to be left handed
