help choosing a preamp?

i have sold my Orange TT and peavey 5150, and kept my peavey triumph 60 simply because it has a manageable size, decent channel options and enough high gain and JJ tubes. 5150 is too big :(

currently i run an od into an AMT pedal into the high gain channel, with some tweaking, the sound is pretty brutal, even though not as thick and tight as the 5150.

but i have been thinking i could improve my sound by a better preamp?
how about an engl 530? or something else? or should i just stay with this and invest in an engl thunder later on?

one thing i need is to keep my rigs small, so 5150-ish sized heads won't qualify. nor will the fireball :(

Re: help choosing a preamp?

A fellow has an Engl 530 with Engl PA. He's gone through Marshalls, Mesas, Peaveys, Crate blue, Hughes & Kettner etc-etc. Now he says it's the first time that he really loves his tone 100%.

An another friend has an ADA MP1 with some Mesa PA. It's an old stuff but the guy creates great tones. He plays in a cover band and he has the most authentic MOP-era 'tallica tone I've ever heard.

An other friend uses a Hughes & Kettner Tubeman. It's the only thing that he carries from gig to gig and his guitar. He's a big time amp/cab borrower but a great guy. Actually, he sounds through anythig equally awesome.

Three cost-effective ways with great results.

Just My 2 cents...
