help choosing right pups

Hi

Was wondering if anyone can help me here?

I am currently using a Fender Big Apple Strat that came with a seymour 59 in the neck and a Pearly Gates plus in the bridge. I don't really like either and would like to replace them with cleaner sounding pups. The 59 sounds a bit too muddy for my taste and the PG sounds too harsh.

I play a style that contains some folk, a little bluesy stuff and some country like stuff along with some rock (no metal) and would prefer a cleaner sound from the pups when I am using my amps clean channel.

Does anyone know what would be the best combination of Seymour humbucker pups (neck & bridge) for a cleaner tone (not harsh or muddy)?

Well those really shouldnt be muddy or harsh pups, what kind of wood is your guitar made of? I would look into maybe Alnico Pro Humbuckers.

My Big Apple has an alder body with a maple neck. So Alnico pros should be cleaner sounding pups than what I have now? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. The Pearly Gates plus uses a different magnet than the Duncan Pearly Gates model, hence the slightly different name. I would suggest getting a Duncan Pearly Gates model for the neck, and maybe a Duncan Alnico II Pro for the bridge. You might also like the '59 better in the bridge spot, as it will be a little less bassy than in the neck position.

welcome man, have you tried adjusting the pickup's height from the strings? too close will sound muddy, too far will sound harsh..

just wondering, i havn't heard anyone describe a PG+ as harsh before... might be just me, i've never tried one though.

still, its quick, reversable and you might find the sound you're looking for without spending any dough :)
