Help choosing the right amp! PLZ

Hey guys..

I want to buy an amp but i have no idea what...
Bogner Ecstasy is the object of my desire but i simply can't afford it, so must buy a cheaper one, something under 2000$..
I love BE because it has both lovely singing clean tones & killing distortion, and that's what i need.. (all in one:D)
I play jazz & hard rock/metal mixed up...
What amp should I use?? Help...

Re: Help choosing the right amp! PLZ

Soldano SLO. If all you need is two sounds, this is your amp. Used they go in the $1500-1800 range. The clean sounds like a plexi Marshall rather than the Vox-like tone the Bogner gets. The lead channel is a bit more brutal and edgy than the Bogner.

dystrust, remember that this amp will be used for jazz (however, modern)so marshall plexi cleans are not a good idea at least for a main clean channel (but they are good addition). Secoundly i prefer 3 channel amp, but a killer 2 channel would be nice too... thx

By a "plexi" tone I meant it is darker and smoother than the Bogner. The SLO and Exstacy are two very different animals. I'd recommend that you try out the SLO before you buy one as some people don't like the overdrive sound.

H&K Triamp?

That's what I've been jonesing for a long time now...

It's hard to beat Mesa Boogies for quality/price ratio. Just try different models with your guitar for the one you like best.

Finally, someone got my subtle hints :laugh2:

In all seriousness, if you want great tone and versatility the H&K Triamp will nail it. I can get sparkling cleans to darker Vox cleans to light blues crunch (reminds me of SRV) to JCM style distortion (great for rock and roll) to hot blues crunch to an uber articulate high gain channel (compare to Soldano's hot channel, VHT's stuff and Bogner's red channel). 100w all tube power with 6 footswitchable channels (to nail just about anything you can imagine). I've played boutique amps and I still won't get rid of this thing, I love it a lot more than most amps in it's range (ENGL Savage/Powerball etc., Mesa Road King). All of this for around a grand used. :burnout:

Ok... salesman rant over.

Re: Help choosing the right amp! PLZ

I'd look at everthing from
Marshall DSL's
ENGL Powerball, Fireball, Savage 120, Blackmore.
Soldano Hotrod 50 Plus, 2 ch.
Top Hat Emplexador 50
Bogner Shiva EL-34 head
H&K Triamp and Duotone
Peavey Satriani model, coming soon.

Check Ebay. Sort hi to low for your price range.
Then, check harmony-central.com reviews, to see what's been said about it.
That's the best way to shop if you don't have any stores that stock the amps you're looking for.

Another consideration would be to try out a rack mounted setup with a Triaxis, JMP-1, or VHT preamp into their corresponding power amps. If you keep a rackmounted setup nice and simple, they sound as good as heads, plus offer far more options.

Think of it this way.

Do you like classic Fender cleans? Sparkling, chimey and beautiful? That's Amp 1 Channel A.

Do you want a darker Vox type clean? That's Amp 1 Channel B.

With the right guitar (aka not a strat, get a jazzbox with warm humbuckers)... you can get a beautiful jazz clean ;)

GJ is right on. Look at all those different amps. "You like what you like" is what it comes down to. I love my Triamp, but some people will want a more metal oriented design like ENGL. If you really want a Bogner, maybe it would be worth it to save up a little longer to fund it?
