Help! Guitar Paint

Okay, I got this guitar from a friend that was painted with regular paint, what are my options?

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

1. Leave it as it is.
2. Repaint it over what is there.
3. Strip it down and leave it.
4. Strip it down and repaint it.

Reranch sells nitro paint that you can use.

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

+1 Reranch is your friend. Buy white primer from them, then the color lacquer paint that you want. You choose what to clear coat it with.

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

house paint or auto body paint? and or spray paint?

if your lucky you may not have to strip

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

in the neck joint do a little test with the new paint you are going to paint to make sure they will work together.

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

ItsaBass has spelled out your options.

If it were mine, the only option would be to strip it and repaint. Your friend probably just painted over the original paint, so it's probably pretty darn thick right now. Plus it will probably start to peal or chip soon. Don't put more paint on top of what is there already.

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

if your careful you might be able to use a paint stripper that wont hurt the old paint under it

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

It is house paint, a couple coats and yes they painted the jack

I thought so. It looks like house paint which is latex based. That stuff won't stick to anything but sheetrock and bare or primed wood. It certainly won't stick to laquer or varnish. It WILL chip and peel!!!!

Strip it! Strip it all off! Then repaint with laquer.

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

I'd strip it down and repaint. I've gotten great results using DuPont Acrylic Lacquer auto body paint. It's what I used on my SG Jr project.

What should I use to strip it? Regular paint thinner (which BTW they don't sell at home depot anymore....???)

Thanks for the advice guys!

Re: Help! Guitar Paint

Of course they sell paint thinner at Home Despot. But it is not a very good stripper. Try a purpose-made stripper, not a thinner.
