HELP! I accidentally demagnetized/degauss my pickups :-(

So, I was polishing my Strat's frets last night with some steel wool. Although I taped my pickups off to protect them from the steel shards, I stupidly used a strong magnet to clean up some steel wool pieces off the guitar's body when I was done polishing.

End Result: my beloved ssl 1/ssl 1/ssl 5 set-up sounds weak and not the same as it did (the neck pickup is now the weakest, as it was exposed to the clean up magnet the longest).

My Questions:
1. Is there any way to remagnatize/regauss the pickups and get them back to original specs? If so, how?

2. Will the pickups (once they're remagnatized/regaussed) be able to sound as good as they once did and be up to the same exacting specs as the originals, or will I just be remagnatizing the pickups in a non-specific/non-controlled way, so they'll sound stronger, but they won't sound like they used to?

3. Should I just bag it, shuck out $150 for three new replacements, consider this an expensive lesson learned and my payback for not paying better attention in my high school science classes?

I really appreciate any advice...thank you!!!

I can't really answer you on how to re-gauss your magnets (although there are lots of people here who can) but I'd like to recommend polishing with a Dremel and a proper polishing wheel next time. The steel-wool thing is sooo punk rock man! ;)

You can recharge magnets by sticking them between two more powerful magnets. You just line up the magnets axis N/S-N/S-N/S and let them sit for a couple of days. I recharge them by putting them between two speaker magnets. You could also go to a store with farm supplies and by cow magnets. Cow magnets are very strong Alnico V or Ceramic magnets that are shaped like a lozenge. Farmers have cattle swallow these magnets to keep any metal they might eat from tearing up their intestines.

hmm
wonder how a cow magnet would sound in a JB:9:

I called SD. They said I could try to remagnetize the pickups, but I probably wouldn't get them back to original specs. The guys in the custom shop are going to get them back to their old form for $10. a pickup. I'm out 30 bucks, but I'm glad they're fixable. Thanks for all the input!

how much are some magnets at a farm supply store? Do you have some stereo speakers in your house? Could always try putting them between those before dropping $30 on taking them out, sending them to Duncan and waiting to ge them back.

You are lucky living in the US. Over here we should just ditch the pickups and travel to Singapore to buy replacements.

You can recharge them your self I'm assuming you don't have a gauss meter
you cant ruin them .what have you got to loose
i would try to recharge them without taking them out of your guitar ,just use a strong neo magnet ,but first put a piece of tape over the alnico poles
then you will want your magnet to attract to your poles not OPPOSE
pass your magnet over your poles with only the tape between the magnets
repeat 5 or 6 times .they should be fully charged
remember if the middle pickup is rw/rp you need to flip your neo magnet
if you want to degauss them a bit you can use you neo magnet to push the gauss down a little
