Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

I've always preferred Boss over Line 6, but that's just my preference. I have the Boss DD-20 and the DigiTech DigiDelay. Both are awesome, but side-by-side, the sound quality and features of the Boss are superior. But for the price, the DigiTech is awesome and versatile. The DD-3 is more of a standard, and it is perfect if you just need a simple digital delay.

Stephen, I haven't read your thread, but I know that I was in your shoes 3 weeks ago and picked up a DL4. Great box!

It does all the aforementioned models well, and their own models are REALLY cool too. The models even have the weird quirks like the oscillations.

I wouldn't recommend the Echo Park because the price difference does justify the loss of switching, AND (most importantly) I thought the pots felt ultra cheap.

get the dl4
i love mine.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

But I'd really rather not spend that much.

I don't need 40 delays with 3000 options. I need delay. With speed adjust. Preferably with tap-tempo.

I never use the analog or the echo or tape delay on the POD. Just digital delay.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

I've used my XT as a multieffects box through several amps, and it sounds absolutely fine to my ears. I did have to tweak it a bit though - you can't use all your regular effects presets and expect them to work. And yes, you must turn amp modelling off. Keep trying before you go spending money on something you probably don't need.

I tried it again today. I need to tweak a bit more, but what I was getting was not satisfactory. I like to set the Franklin to just on the edge of overdrive, and the POD cleaned it up. It sounded okay, but it cut some of the natural edge of the amp tone. Me no likey. Although the POD would be easier to set up and wouldn't require spending any $$$.

Do you have a price limit in mind?

The thing is the DL4 gives you the tap tempo (built in) and all the models...plus you can assign 3 of them...then toss in a loop sampler and you get a pretty cool box.

FWIW With a boss DD you have to spend another 20 bucks on an additional pedal, so you are already up in the 150-170 dollar range. I bought my DL4 for 210 shipped in Mint condition off Ebay. I think the options are well worth it...but Christian was the one who did that convincing initially so I thank him for that.

You will no likey any delay in front of the amp, unless you likey the repeats retaining much of their original volume, but progressively cleaning up.

It's a really cool effect, but NOT what you want for "normal" delay.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

I know it's not on the list but, you need an EHX Memory Man. Seriously. It'll take you to infinty and beyond.

Maxon Analog Delay AD-999.

I own one and I can't imagine a life without it. Once you are hooked, you will NEVER EVER go back to fake & lifeless digital delays.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

yeah, but its analog. what ya got, 800ms?! thats barely enough to hear it as 2 separate sounds! :)

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

So far, I'm not impressed with analog delay.

And in front of the amp is the only option. No effects loop.

I'm not into infinite delay. Most often, it would be used as sort of an advanced reverb to 'fill' the sound

99% of the time, I use nothing but a dab of slap-back, and that sounds like what you're describing. I try to see the big picture, though. If I'm going to spend some money, I try to make it meet today's needs and anticipate the possibility that I may want for it to do more. The DL4 met that criteria. I'm not trying to talk you into it, I just think that it merits your consideration because it would fit your stated needs, and you can find them on eBay fairly cheap, fairly often.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

I won't rule it out. But when I've checked the last couple of days, the DL4 is still going for $200.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

re-reading the first post, i thought $500 was the 'too expensive' mark. The DL4 (approx $150 on Ebay) and DD-20 are too much than you need, yet they are in your poll. I am just trying to get a better idea of what you want.

for a really basic digital delay, the cheaper boss DD 3/5 would probably do it, but any decent digital delay would most likely be over $100. Most likely in the $120-$150 (like the Line6 Echo park). Thats not a big leap from the other delays which provide much more control over the sound.
If you have decided there are a few delays on the poll that you will not consider, please give us a real 'highest price' mark and a list of features you need or want. But make sure to try a lot of them. For some people rhythmic delays are important, for some, modulated delays do it. For me, I absolutely need tap tempo, and the ability to control feedback in real time. I also like the delays to 'trail off' when I turn it off, which sounds really cool.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

I've stated my preferences (see above). I'd rather not spend $200 unless it is absolutely necessary. That would "delay" my delay purchase.

I accept that the DL4 is one of the better ones. See above.

Re: Help LesStrat choose a delay pedal

The local music shop is having a Labor Day sale. They already price match, and they're offering 20% off in addition. I just need to narrow it down a bit before I go shopping.
