Help load my PRS guitars with Duncans!

Hey guys,

I'm excited to be back in the pickup game after a long while away. I recently sold my Axe FX to come back to a tube amp with a Mesa Mark V. With the Axe FX, I was essentially leaving whatever pickups were in the guitar, as the versatility of that unit tended to mask the nuances of the pickups (IMO). However, with the Boogie, I am once again discovering the magic that a good guitar/pickup/amp combo can make.

I'm a modern high gain player, trading rhythm-ish and lead-ish licks frequently. Based on that, I tend to prefer an overall balanced response, with clarity throughout the range of the guitar. I have 5 PRS guitars I'd like to load up with Duncans:

- PRS Tremonti: Drop Db
- PRS Tremonti: Eb Standard
- PRS Tremonti: Open Db
- PRS CU24: Drop C
- PRS CU24: D standard

The guitars are standard PRS spec (mahogany body and neck, Maple top, rosewood board), and currently have stock PRS pickups (Tremonti and HFS/VB, respectively). With how clear and high gain the Boogie Mark V is, I'm finding these high output ceramic pickup sets are a little too much - they become a little abrasive, and tend to over compress the signal rather than let the amp do the work.

Overall, I'm looking to find some pickups that will lend themselves to my playing style, these guitars, and most importantly, the amp. With the Tremonti guitars, I'd prefer to embrace the Singlecut design a little more, and maintain a slightly more organic/versatile version of the modern high gain sound. With the Custom 24s, I'd like to, comparatively, go more aggressive, tight, etc. without going too over the top like the current sets.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, while I'd like these pickups bring out the natural characteristics of the two guitars models, I also need them to not be vastly different, so a single EQ of the amp will offer good iterations on the core sound. There are obviously many ways to succeed in this: Different pickups per guitar? The same set of pickups in them all? One set in the Tremontis and another in the CU24s? I'm curious to hear your input.

Duncan seems to have A LOT to offer since I was last on the pickup hunt. The Pegasus/Sentient set looks great for my application. There is the 59/Custom Hybrid, Perpetual Burn, etc. Older models like the Full Shred seem like they could work as well. My biggest dilemma is where to start. Assuming the Pegasus/Sentient is a good choice: should it be the 'more aggressive' set for me, and then I step back slightly to something like the 59/Custom Hybrid? Or should the Pegasus/Sentient be the 'more organic' set, and go a little hotter in the CU24s?

Please let me know your thoughts, and thank you in advance for taking the time!

Best,

Eric

I am a big PRS guy myself, so I will throw something your way. If you are willing to spend a bit more, the S-Deco would be right up your alley: moderate output, clear, dynamic and tight! They sound great in PRS's. I have one in one of my singlecuts right now (although it has two sets of hex screws like a Full shred and an A8 magnet).

The Hybrid would also be a good choice. Compared to the Deco, it will have more bottom and top end.

+1 on the Pegasus/Sentient. If you don't like it, you have 21 day's to return.

I jumped in here to suggest the S-Deco myself. I have an older, bolt-neck CE 24, but that was the one pickup that worked "properly" in the bridge. I put an A3 mag in an Alnico II Pro (so an "Alnico III Pro") in the neck, which work fantastically too. I like brighter, clearer neck tones than some.

I know you said high output ceramics are abrasive to you, and I had the same experience with a Distortion set in my Les Paul, so I get it. But that same set in my PRS is golden, and nothing does downtuned metal better. I also think the bigger magnet helps tame some of the harshness. It's surprisingly versatile too, since I wired it for coil splitting. Just a thought.

Re: Help load my PRS guitars with Duncans!

I don't have any PRS guitars, I do use alot of Gibson through my MkV. It seems to like medium output HBs better than really high output. I use a Screamin Demon/jazz neck in my Studio, Demon/490 in the SG, A2pro Slash set in my Custom, Gibson Super57/57 classic in the trad pro, and even though I don't usually like ceramic I keep a Distortion set in my Double Cutaway Studio (which is very similar to a PRS Santana). I don't have any experience with the Pegasus/Sentient set, but Demon/Jazz, 59 Custom hybrid/59 or jazz, or Custom 5/Jazz would probably all workout great. Distortions are the best ceramics I've ever used, but I mostly prefer A5 then A2 then Ceramic. The Slash's are great in my marshalls, but too mushy in the Boogie for me

I'm in a similar situation, got a CU22 with the stock dragon ii's in it. I swapped them out (foolishly) for actives years ago and ended up barely using it shortly thereafter. Since putting the stock pups back in I'm reminded that the dragon ii's don't do it for me. I'm currently considering putting in a Custom V or Custom Custom with a 59 in the neck, but the Custom/59 Hybrid has piqued my interest too now.

For what its worth those would be one of my picks. However I don't have any experience with them, save for the 59 neck, but I've never been disappointed by any of the Duncan's I've tried (SH-4, SH-6, SH-12, SH-1, SH-8)

I really like the PG(b) in the neck and the Alt 8 in the bridge of my CU24. I'm mainly playing in Db though.
