help making infinite sustainer

hi i have been building and repairing guitars for a little while. (a few years) making each build more and more complicated. so there is one body i started a while ago have a few extra necks laying around. I thought what should I do next? then I saw a video on youtube about an infinite sustainer. but it was external and only three strings. I found out you can use a junk pickup as a driver (with slight modifications). I wanted this guitar to be wired like a les paul with a p90 and humbucker. humbucker volume having split pole. p90 volume having phase. that was easy enough. but now I need to under stand how to make an infinite sustainer and ad it as part of the wiring I don't really understand amp diagrams is anyone able to explain in a dumbed down way how to do this with maybe a picture diagram? also I understand you need an amp or something like that would I be able to use one of those mini preamps that they sell that goes inside your guitar like guitar fetish sells kind of like this. http://guitarfetish.com/Onboard-25-Watt-Guitar-Amp-Drive-a-speaker-OR-Headphones_p_567.html i haven't done any wiring yet plus still have to rout most of it. so I have the ability to make it what I want. wont be able to continue with it until spring anyways just want to make sure i have everything and it all planned out thank you- Andrew

I was doing more research watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md5aHzoegYs&t=216s and to slightly change the question can I use an old pickup and the components of lie a headphone amp if so how would I attach the dry signal jack on les paul wiring woud it be the same as how I attach the guitars jack through the three way switch

Welcome to the forum!

This is an interesting idea, and I'd love to see how it progresses. I've heard of other people doing this by studying how a Fernandes Sustainer or Sustaniac works and copying it. There are some drawing (and patent info) out there, so my guess is that is the key to how all of this is wired together.

Why not just get a Sustainer or Sustaniac? Or a sustainer pedal?

well the reason why I don't want to buy a fernades sustainer is because my goal inn life is to be a luthier and one day open my own custom guitar shop so I want to learn as much about building as possible and I also want to make a one of a kind guitar just for my use I have been building with improvised tools I don't have a router yet that's what I plan to get next so I have been using a rotary tool aka dremel using special bits and plunge router adapter I just bought a band saw before that I was using a jig saw I haven't built a neck yet after I make this one I plan to build a neck I learned to use a band saw in school when I built my first body every build I ad something to make it a little more complicated instead of just rushing in and building one from scratch I live in an apartment but my friend rents a garage that he keeps most of his tools in he lets me use it when I want so at least I have somewhere to work on them I might just make what that guy in the video did and put it inside the guitar in a cavity use those buzzers for all six strings and make a bobbin so it looks like a pickup incase I wasn't clear it was going to have two pickups wired like a les paul then have a third pickup that's actually a sustainer not a pickup I made a dummy guitar out of a spare neck and extra bridge and junk wood so I can test the sustainer before I put it in the guitar

Re: help making infinite sustainer

I think it is worth chasing after, and I am sure there are pages out there dissecting a Fernandes unit. The hard part is getting the sustained note to balance in volume, and not cause any extra noise through the passive pickups when it is used. They also take a bit of getting used to if you've ever played with one. You really have to mute every sting except the one you are playing.
