Help me Artie!!!!

Here's my problem. I have a Charvel 750XL. It looks like this:

Charvel750XL-VGA.jpg

I am atempting to install a DiMarzio PAF in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge. The Electronics are equipped with the Jackson JE-0005 5 way 4 pole Switch as shown here in the bottom right corner: http://www.jcfonline.com/resources/JC_Electronics_Manual/target11.html

The description of the switch is here, again, bottom right corner: http://www.jcfonline.com/resources/JC_Electronics_Manual/target10.html

This wiring should provide the following, neck and bridge humbuckers alone at either end, both humbuckers in the middle and the notch positions should be outside coils in parallel and inside coils in parallel.

I'm having trouble reading the diagram for the switch and so I used one from DiMarzio's site:
http://www.dimarzio.com/Text/Wiring/TwoHumbuckers5WayMultiple.pdf

and this one from guitarelectronics.com:
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUHH5L1102

but it seems only the Jackson one will work because the switch seems different than other MegaSwitches.

I'm not really concerned with which notch position is which so long as they do what they are supposed to.

Sorry for the long post. I hope you can help!

Thanks in advance!

Trevor

Re: Help me Artie!!!!

It looks to me like, basically, you're trying to replace pups that have SD's colors with DMZ colors. So it would go like this:

pinto79_jackson.png

And you're right - that switch is hard to read. The color conversion is like this:

Jackson . . . DMZ
green. . . . . green
red . . . . . . white
black. . . . . red
white. . . . . black

See if that does it for you. If not, we'll get it. ;)

Well, I've disturbed all the wiring trying things and I have a mess now. I look at the diagram and I can't tell where things should go... :(

Colour codes are not a problem for me, it's trying to see how all the jumper loops go...

Assuming that the pickup on the left is the bridge, I drew it out like this: (please note white rendered as light grey and the bare wire was omitted for clarity)

This is using DiMarzio Colours. I think I got it right, but I put a ? beside one link that I'm not sure of.

What do you think?

Thats not quite correct. The jumper is, but you wouldn't have all those terminals shorted together or they'ld perform no function. It should be like this:

I'll have to look over the rest of that drawing. Gimme a little time - I'm cookin' tonight. ;)

Edit: It looks to me like the rest of it is good. I'm going to look it over a bit more though.

Ok... I've tried everything. I give up... :(

I'll buy a MegaSwitch and use the DiMarzio diagram... I'll put a 3 way in for now so I can use the guitar...

Thanks for your help!

Actually, on second thought, are there any views of the swithc I can take pictures of to help you make a diagram from scratch?

I hate to give up on stuff...

Possibly. It would just need to be clear enough that I could see the switch deck clearly. One of the things that makes me wonder if that works like a regular superswitch, is that they bring that red wire over to the other side. That is, they connect it in between those blue lines. Since they have the commons connected together, there's no need to do that. They could've just connected them to the same terminals on the side the wire comes into.

Like this:

OK... here are 3 pics of the switch. It's kinda tough to get really good ones... if these are not big enough, I snapped them at 3.1 mega pixels, I could e-mail them to you. The originals are about 1 meg each...

How's that?

Re: Help me Artie!!!!

Thats great. The only one thats relevant is the top one. (You could edit your post to eliminate the other two.)

But I need to verify one thing. Could you take the top photo one more time, but this time, move the handle one "click" to the left. That would help tremendously. I need to see if those two terminals short together.

Edit: Actually, I need two more. With the handle 1 click left, and 2 clicks left. Just substitute those for the other two in your post. That would be great.

Edit 2: The more I look at that, the more I suspect that that won't help either. The trouble is, one side of that switch is different than the other. One side has 2 and 4 lugs, the other has 1 and 5 lugs.

I hate to make you spend money, but a new superswitch would make this a lot easier. :laugh2:
Still . . . if you post those pics, I'll see what I can do.

Ok, it looks like it works like a regular superswitch, but with the terminals arranged in a bizarre fashion. Now I can look over the wiring better, and maybe understand. I'll post back as soon as I do. ;)

Re: Help me Artie!!!!

Don't worry. I didn't forget. :)

I gotta go work on a ship today. I'll try to post something this evening, when I get back.

I thought of something... we're doing this assuming that the Jackson colours are the same as Duncans... According to the colour chart at www.guitarelectronics.com they, and their DiMarzio equivilants:

Jack DMZ
Black...Green
Green...Red
Red...White
White...Black

Would that change anything?

Re: Help me Artie!!!!

Gentle bump... Have you managed to rest from your time on the ship?

Let me know if you have any ideas on this. If you give up too, I will go buy a new switch.

Thanks Artie. You're the man!

I have a buddy who actually has first crack. It was hanging in the Store where I used to work, for like a year after it was traded in... I didn't really like it at first, it didn't play that well. This friend of mine came in with his wife, (on my day off of course...?) with cash to buy it, and the owner of the store basically ignored him. His wife said forget this, we're outta here... sooooo, I took it home and put on my favourite strings and did a full set-up, and now it plays like a dream. So I bought it... :) Scott told me that if I want to sell it, he'll buy it in order to "keep it in the loop".

If I loose my mind and decide to sell and Scott passes, I'll be in touch...

Thanks for the bump and the compliment on "Blaze"

Re: Help me Artie!!!!

I knew there was a couple threads somewhere that slipped by me. :)

Let me look this over to remind myself whats going on, and I'll update it before the days over.

Re: Help me Artie!!!!

Ok, I'm reasonably certain that this will do it. I'm using DMZ colors here, so you can wire it direct. The upper-right corner in this drawing refers to the left side of the switch as it appears in your pics. Which should be fine. If you install the switch in the guitar the proper way, everything should line up.

This is one of the few drawings I've done where I don't have high confidence in its correctness. That dang switch is just illogically weird! I'm fairly sure . . . just not positive. If this doesn't work, you'll just have to spring for a Superswitch. :blackeye:

Hope this does it. :)
