Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

For those: IM1 or the Fender EVH (CC is a popular choice for those too)
For earlier tones: '78

Easy....

I tweaked my 5150's EQ a bit, and I'm using a resonator effect on my gt8 and I tell you after about 1/3 volume Im pumping out some massive tone, and some mesmerizingly rich overtones. Now I don't know what to do!

I'm concerned that by changing the volume pot from 250k to 500k I'll lose some of the tonal fatness I'm getting, as from my understanding( and correct me if I'm wrong) going to a 500k pot thins the sound out a bit.

Any reason to believe by swapping the JB for any of the pickups I mentioned, that I'll lose that fat bottom end (I love my guitars in this regard, like I love my women)?

I think I need a second guitar for a 78'. I guess I could always get an EVH or 78' and swap it out for the JB every once in a while when I want more modern tones.

The neurosis is finally setting in. Good thing I don't drink.

I need a guitar that with the flick of a switch accurately emulates any PU I want on the fly.

LOL...how do you think I ended up about 30 guitars over the years....SD needs to stop making pickups.

Your guitar should have 500K pots as OEM, unless someone changed them at some point in time. 500K pots won't "thin" the sound out, you get more of everything across the spectrum, but most notice a boost in the highs because your ears are more sensitive around those frequencies - the same thing happens when you start taking controls out of the circuit.

Good luck on your search, I have ordered my IM1 since this thread reminded me of it.

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

I will admit I'm not the expert, but I have an EVH and it kicks ass. I get that Panama sound running through a 5150 combo. Just for background, it is in an alder bodied strat with a regular tremolo. It certainly gives the late DLR to early Sammy sound. From what it sounds like you want, I'd go with the EVH if you don't mind paying more than the CC.

I have not played through a 78 or a CC. Although, I have a CC that is going in an ash guitar soon.

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

What guitars were the pickups in when you played them?

Alder superstrats with Floyds...my '78 is in an Ash superstrat with Floyd and the EVH was in the actual $25K :bigeyes2: replica guitar (I did not buy it). All have maple necks/boards and single 500K volume controls.

Now if I go with Binnerscot and MJ's suggestion of adding a 500k volume pot to a SD 78', should I expect it to sound 'hotter' than the JB with the 250 K pot?

What are the disadvantages, if any, of going from 250k to 500k volume pots? If I do this with my JB, what exactly should I expect?

Pot (:P) aside, judging from the specs of the JB (Sh4), and the 78', should I expect the 78' to be less gainy?

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

Forget about the 250K pot! You don't have to add anything! There is 99% chance you have a 500K volume pot in your guitar with HB's. Just use that pot for a master volume and disconnect tone pot(s). You don't need to remove tone pots from the guitar just disconnect them from the circuit. Schematics are on this site!
Multimeter is a useful tool when working with guitar electronics.

It is a 250k pot, I already confirmed. The Jackson is a Japanese model, maybe that's why.

Here's a clip I made a few years ago (yes, it's sloppy, i realize), but it gives you an idea of the tone I have with the JB in bridge position of the Jackson. The recording sounds a bit hollow as I"m using a standard $5 PC mic in front of the 5150.

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

I played one, in the replica...it is tonally much closer to the '78 than the CC.

The EVH is whats in the new Wolfgang isn't it, not the Frankie replica? The pickup in the Frankie is a CC for all practical purposes as far as I can tell regardless of what they call it

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

Funny you should suggest the 59' as I was strongly considering it at the time I got my JB. I may be mistaken, but it isn't a very hot sounding pickup and I was afraid it'd sound weak in my guitar.

Are the PB and A2P SD PUs (not finding them on the site)?

The PG = Pearly Gates and is my go to pickup for early VH tones

I'm pretty certain the EVH is the PU in the Frankie replicas Fender was selling not too long ago, therefore it would be associated more with the older VH sound. I'm not certain if, by "EVH" you mean the 78', the Wolfgang PUs , or Frankie replia PUs (latter 2 sold under the Fender name)

The CC to my ears does sound different than the Frankie replica.

The 78' is a really sweet sounding pickup, as is the EVH replica. After listening to the two more, I'm finding the EVH definitely has a more compressed, heavier tone, and the 78' sounds a bit more open. Likely it'll be one of the 2 PUs for me, and an upgrade to a 500k pot which I think i'd definitely need if I decide to go with the 78'.

No, the EVH/Fender that is being mentioned is what is in the replica, and it isn't a CC...I have no idea what is in the new Wolfgangs.

Wolfgang = Bridge: EVH® humbucking pickup
Replica = Bridge pickup: Seymour Duncan® Custom Shop EVH

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

Ok, I dropped a 500k volume pot in the guitar, wired it exactly as the old 250k was wired. I get sound, but the volume does not adjust. What's the deal?

I am getting sound, in fact I had the volume pedal on my gt8 set quite low as it is a bit late to really open up the sound, but it did sound noticeably hotter - like a lion let out its cage. VERY curious to hear how it sounds tomorrow when I get a change to crank things up a bit.

[EDIT] I just noticed the original pot seems to have had one of the 3 connectors soldered to the pot itself. I'll fix this tomorrow and hope it resolves the problem

Kinda sucks the guy sold me a pot that's has a neck a bit too wide to fit through the hole in the body. I'll have to get another one that has a slightly smaller neck.

When you bypass the tone control(s) you decrease the loading on the circuit due to less pots....a no-load control will not load the circuit either when turned all the way up.

I think it's no longer having a tone cap, taking treble to ground, that gives the brightness.

No, it is actually the resistance of the pot itself that makes the difference, the cap isn't affecting the tone whne the control is all the way up.

idea as to why I can't adjust the volume?

something's wrong with the pot or your wiring job.

Take your old stock volume pot to the store and ask the same size-type but only a 500K audio pot - a cts or bourns 500K audio pot.
Then go to sd.com and find the wiring diagram you want concerning your pickups configuration - look for the 1 volume pot diagram

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

ok, seems to be ok now, it was that 3rd contact not being soldered to the pot body itself.

It's very loud. It's also bringing in a lot more feedback through the amp. Can I counter this by lowering the pickup height? I'm hearing the pic attack too much and it's a bit harsh on my ears.

Re: Help me choose between SD 78', Custom Custom, and EVH Frankie Replica

A month later and more confounded than ever!

Ok, so the choices are:

79'
Frankie
Custom Custom

Wolfgang
Axis pickups I've found on ebay

I think going for the original sound I'd be better going high output with the frankie or CC. I am using a peavey 5150 combo.

I threw the wolfgang and ErnieBall Axis (dimarzio) PUs into the mix because I'm wondering with the mahogany body jackson I'd be more successful in getting Ed's 90s-on tone, which seems to be a much fatter tone.

Kinda goes without saying I need more guitars.
