Help me choose my first bass guitar

Re: Help me choose my first bass guitar

That is a lot of bass guitar for the money.

One downside to the specification is the pairing of EMG-35DC and -35J pickups. There will be a noticeable difference in volume between them. They never quite make the "honk" that a -35J pair would. On the other hand, if the pickup employ the EMG solderless Quik Connect loom, it would be a simple screwdriver job to change a pickup.

All EMG's ship with the solderless system, even OEM ones. Now the manufacturer may decide to solder the system after that, but the pickups themselves can be disconnected with the Quikconnect. I'm a big fan of Schecter and feel that they give a great product for the price and this bass is no different. I've played one and can attest that such a solid instrument should not be available in that price range.

Re: Help me choose my first bass guitar

As fully passive bass guitars go, the Jazz is probably the most versatile. A skilled player can extract a good deal of tonal variety from a Precision Bass.

The German-built Warwick Corvette Standard is passive. For my tastes, the MEC J pickups could do with replacing.

On either a Squier VM or the Warwick, the new SD Apollo noiseless pickups would be interesting.

Re: Help me choose my first bass guitar

- In this thread, the important question is 30" v. 34" scale length. This will affect both the feel and the tone.

A secondary consideration is resale. A Jazz Bass will be easy to shift. A Jaguar less so. A short scale Jaguar considerably less so.

- The JJ v. PJ v. P argument is as old as the electric bass guitar itself. I am not about to launch into that argument here.

- 34" is the scale for basses. That's what the vast majority are and what most players love.

- I will: Jazz!

I don't even think you need a skilled player to do that. I'm not a fan of the P-bass pickup or neck but anyone can dial in a good sound for any occasion with one.

Re: Help me choose my first bass guitar

what kind of music? You playing out too?
It's hard for me to say, I can really like anything regardless of genre.
I don't want the bass to be specialized for one kind of music.

And for now I only want it for recordings...

Re: Help me choose my first bass guitar

How about the Mustang Bass with P and J pickups, tww sounds in one instrument? I am also looking to get one for recording but not interested in an exopensive one and this looks interesting.

Help me choose my first bass guitar

I have the VM Jaguar 5 string. I would say the bridge J is not the full jazz sound obviously. And soloing P despite the active boost does not quite measure up to my Fender MIM P in tone. I don't know exactly why the P is not quite as good. Could be the 20 year model difference, the price point difference, the addition of the active circuit - who knows.

BUT I love it just the same. It is a ton of value for the money. Shockingly nice instrument for the money.

Would like to add that the P, J combo with the tone and bass boost is its own awesome thing.

Caveat: just had a thought that I need to get the same type of strings on the new Jaguar as the P to really evaluate the difference. I could be in for a happy surprise there.

Re: Help me choose my first bass guitar

So after I couldn't find any Squier Vintage Modified In my country, I decided to buy a Cort since it's being made in the same factory as the squiers.
I'm pretty happy with it, a PJ Pickup Configuration and it looks and sounds very nice ! I'm not a bass expert though :nervous: ...
Here's a video I uploaded, please let me know what do you think, thanks !

Guitars or Basses, the Squier VM line is great. The Ernie Ball SUB line is really good too. Just depends on what style you'd like.

The build quality does look great, I plan to buy a Cort strat copy.

Re: Help me choose my first bass guitar

A hollow body bass, handy for practice and great tone. Ibanez Artcore is a good example:

I have issues with neck dive on any bass. I love how this one looks but suspect dive would be an issue due to where the strap button likely is in relation to the 12th fret.

Is it an issue with this?
