Help me chosing a speaker for my 1x12 tube combo

I finally found a used YCV40 at a good price and love it every bit, but I know I can improve the sound further. I need new tubes and a new speaker.

The current speaker is a Celestion 70/80, which is not that bad. But for having used a Vintage 30 in the same amp, I now it can be improved.

The YCV40 is an amp that has spongy bass. The 70/80 is actually better in tightening the bass than the V30, which gives better definition of the mids and highs, but does nothing to cure the spongy bass.

What I'm looking for is a speaker that will give me good mids and highs definition (without ice pic) while tightening the bass.

The G12H30 sounds like a good option, but a 30 watt speaker in a 40 watt combo scares me a little. So I'm naturally thinking the Eminence Wizard would be a good option.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

PS : Please don't suggest a G12T75, I hate this speaker.

go ahead and try the wizard, they have a good reputation for having good mids and highs.

One thing I owned once that had really tight bass for an otherwise british-sounding speaker was the Eminence Legend V128. A sort-of "out front" midrange like a V30, and also some high end drop off. Way tight in the bass though.

Thanks man. It's difficult because we hear so many different things. I heard the Legend GB was also great. Weber for instance. After hearing them compared to many other brands, I actually don't like them at all.

I don't want to save money on the speaker. It'll be the major upgrade of the amp, and I prefer to pay 30-40 bucks more to be sure it'll be a worthy upgrade.

I play mainly classic and hard rock and some cleans, a little jazz and blues and CCR kinda clean.

I own a 2x12 cab loaded with Legends GB128, they're great but not particulary tight bass. Even the Emi website calls them " A cleaner Private Jack tone with a fatter low end."

my 2 cents

Thanks man. I just went through dozens of clip on youtube and I'm still back to the V30... this speaker just seem to have such perfect mids and highs... I think I'll have to live with a loser bottom end. I'm now 90% sold to the V30.

why dont you just use a v30? you already know its good and it does exactly what you described.

The eminence screamin eagle has the tightest/least bass of anything I've ever heard. If you could get your hands on one of those, you could at least see if your bass flubbiness is the amp/cab or the speaker.
The RW&B is also pretty tight. You may want to look into one. You'll loose some mids but it might be worth it if you wanna get the bass under control.
