Help me decide on a Celestion?

Hi all,

Looking at some Celestions for a possible speaker upgrade. I am looking for warmness and darkness. Don't really care for too much brightness. Which of the following would fit this? Or please tell me your experience in comparing them.

Thanks!

Heritage Series G12H(55)
Vintage 30
G12H Anniversary

None of those three. They all have the heavy magnet which increases highs and bass. You want an M magnet Celestion such as the G12M25 Greenback or the G12-65 for more warmth and softer highs.

Not Celestion, but . . . Eminence Cannabis Rex. At least check it out.

Re: Help me decide on a Celestion?

I can definitely say that the V30 has strong mids, it's not dark like you want. I can't vouch for the others on your list.

You might want to look at the Red Coat, Wizard, or Swamp Thang from Eminence.

Happy speaker hunting!:bigthumb:

Heritage (UK reissue) or Rola (original UK) g12-65 (sixty five model, with a 6 and no letter in the middle, aka the JCM800 cab speaker...not to be confused w/ 12m65, which is a diff speaker) - raunchy warm/dark, tame highs big lomid hump nice clear fartless bass...or for more honky speaker breakup, greenbacks (g12m) or higher wattage, 50-65 watt 'backs versions: lynchbacks, g12m65, etc. (if using a big head for 412, or in any case unless your amp is <15w for 212 or 112)

...V30 is pretty much the opposite of what you asked for, shrill with oodles of himid and high frequencies. As to the other 2, dunno, never piqued my interest and seemed unmemorable (ymmv)

Thanks for the suggestions...Good to know my initial thoughts were wrong...

Extra question....Any drawback of placing a higher wattage rated speaker in a lower wattage amp? Say putting that G12-65 (65w) into an amp that is rated for 30w ?

Re: Help me decide on a Celestion?

No drawbacks. Your speaker load should always at least be more watts than the amp can dish out. 30w amp into a 65w speaker is quite an ideal amount of headroom.

They are all bright speakers but the Vintage 30 will seem the darkest of the bunch with it's prominent upper mids. Either the G12-65 or the new G12-65M Creamback might be more worthy of your consideration from the celestion catalogue.

Duuuuude... its the ONLY WAY TO PLAY!

Gotta exceed amp wattage. ALWAYS. Preferably by 2-3x if you wanna be 100% sure you never blow a speaker. Which, if you've got speakers wired in series in a single cab (16 ohm 212, for example, or a dumb move like a series/parallel 16ohm 412 instead of a safe parallel/series wiring) and are only using a single tap off your tube amp WILL THEN BLOW UP YOUR AMP DUE TO TOTAL LOSS OF LOAD (with stereo, two cabs, or parallel wiring, it SHOULD survive, since it just gets an impedance increase....unless the full force of the amp proceeds to cascade blow the other side of the parallel wiring, in which case amp and both speakers ascend to amplification heaven together)

...that's why you often see 50-100 watt heads pushing 260-280-300 watt cabinets, sometimes SEVERAL at a time. No problem. Heck I've rocked out a 300w cabinet with a 5w tube amp to veeeery pleasant effect!

Re: Help me decide on a Celestion?

I've been listening to a lot of speakers lately.....owning them, not youtube. Plus, I go to all the Amp Shows where I can hear great amps with a variety of high end speakers.

For years, I just defaulted to V30's because they come in most high end amps and they have nice upper mid presence in a mix.

The new Celestion Creamback 65 is a beautiful sounding speaker. Most other Celestions sound really good, but have something that hits your ear or makes you wish it were a tiny bit different. The Creamback 65 sounds like a very ideal speaker for cleans to hard rock. Not sure about metal. For that, a mix of V30 and G12T-75 like the Uberkab has seems better.

And from Eminence, the Swamp Thang is a big sounding speaker that sounds balanced and has no high end sizzle, just clear highs. For Fender amps, the Swamp Thang is like instant fatness, while retaining what you like about Fender. It sounds big and tight for highgain too. It's one of Eminence's best.

The speakers I'm most likely to buy next are the Creamback 75 or Lynchback. Or, another Creamback 65. Any of those three, I'd buy on the spot.
