Help me decide on my next amp

Re: Help me decide on my next amp

Some excellent selections here!

Front-runners are: Deluxe, Bassman, Ironheart.

Sunn Model T sounds really intriguing, I will have to do some looking into it. Any recommendation from Kev has to be taken seriously! :)

Re: Help me decide on my next amp

A Tweed Bassman clone man, 5E6... Fender, Victoria, Mission amps? All of them are fine I suppose. BTW 5E8, a 40W Twin is also one, that I think, you'd want to consider. Anyways, that's what I'd do. Love them tweeds, they can be clean AND dirty. Meanwhile, my next pick would be a Brown Fender Vibro/Deluxe clone. Again for the very same reasons.

You have the Dual Recto and JMP sounds covered. So you have gainey stuff anyways.

Thanks for the input thus far, guys. Time to start the heavy research. Looks like the Sunn Model T is a bit of a rare bird...

Model T is a cool amp but they are not easy to find, afford and at the price of the odd ball tubes they use they are not easy to keep up either. Not to mention they are loud as all get out...

What kind of power can you handle on a new amp??

Re: Help me decide on my next amp

Good question. You know me -- I would rather run 1W balls-out than 100W at a fraction of that. SPLs is not really an issue because I will do whatever it takes to get the tone I want recorded. This usually means playing the amp L-O-U-D and proud. I have grown more partial to power stage distortion of late (as you also know), which is why I think 30W with the right master volume circuit would be about my upper limit. But I don't want to bias the suggestions.

I agree about the Model T; I would HAVE to play one in the flesh.

I am also thinking about a Hiwatt or Hiwatt clone ... that would probably be 50W.

I hear ya. 30-50 watts seems to be a real sweet spot for players like that (like you I am in the same boat). I don't currently have anything in that range but 2 18-20 watters in stereo does great things too!

I used top play through a borrowed Model T for a while...this was years ago, before the sludge/doom crowd deemed them one of the ultimate doom amps and at the time they could be had cheep...in fact the one I borrowed was offered to me for sale several times for a few hundred bucks...and I passed!

They are mega loud...they run a quad of 6550's for a VERY modest 120-150 watts. I don't know what they were sold at in terms of rated power but I know the one I used had a set of old metal base Tung Sol 6550's and was putting out 180ish watts RMS.

However I was thinking about a different amp when I mentioned the cost of tubes...It's been a while but I'm thinking that the Model T's run the quad of 6550's and a trio of 12AX7's...

Now...HiWatts...those are fun!

Buddy of mine had a later era, PCB, 2 input 50 watter and even though those are the ones HiWatt heads say are NOT the ones to have it was a killer amp!

Such an aggressive and punchy attack!
