I've been thinking bout getting a new guitar for a while. i want something with a bigsby and these are the the ones from my "top budget guitars I want" list

epiphone 335 in white ( I love white guitars btw)

schecter ultra III in vintage cream (i love cream too)

has anyone played any of these? did any stand out above the rest? I'm probably leaning more towards the epiphone as it's ltd edition but I already have a white sheraton I can live with for now.

cheers

I would say the Gretsch, then get the TVJones pickups. I have an Electromatic, and I use to have an Epi Sheraton. I think more hollow is better, Gretsch is Gretsch, well, no theyre Asian, but are ultimate at that shiny cadillac tone. Mine can do ALOT. Like Setzer sez, if you want the Les Paul meat but the Strat shine, Gretsch splits tbe two and adds that whole more. They sound as fancy as look. In fact, if you can dig up those early Chet Atkins vids on youtube, you will come out with Gretsch fever.

Brian Setzer & Chris Cheney have already giving me gretsch fever! I've already thought about the upgrades... Tv jones, rocking bridge, real bigsby, new tuners, all gold hardware etc. It will be mine one day!

I know they are made in korea but what is the quality like compared to say epiphone? i mean i could get a gibson for the same price as one of those electromatics.

I'd get the 355. I am glad Epi is finally making them, and in white! I miss my white Sheraton II something fierce.

That Epi looks really tasty!

The Epi is really sweet, but I'd go with the Gretsch. I used to have an old Tennessean that was great.

On looks alone, the Epi. But in terms of playability/quality it would probably be the Gretsch.

+1. They are nice. Put a pair of Duncan PAF's in it and you'll be a happy boy.

Re: help me decide which guitar to get next

this is tough.......I would only consider the schecter if I don't already have other nice solid bodies. Leaning towards the gretsch and tv jones, that epi 335 must be killer though.

Re: help me decide which guitar to get next

How much is that Epi? You could have my Epi Lucille for way less. Any colour you like as long as it's black. ;)

It ain't really a 355 unless it has a Vari-Tone circuit.

Re: help me decide which guitar to get next

That is what I always thought until I bought a guitar that came with one already fitted - albeit in budget PCB form. Suddenly, numerous rhythm guitar tones of the Sixties were falling out of the guitar. Admittedly, these are mainly "backing" guitar tones. The only settings that I would consider using for lead work are the Bypass and the one that gives the Michael Schenker cocked wah pedal honk.

I had a Lucille and couldn't see any use for the Varitone, except 'bypass.' Maybe there's some merit to the overall concept, but on a Gibson Varitone, those 5 filtered tones leave a lot to be desired. I'd like to see someone come up with a better way to execute it, so every position is worthwhile. Although maybe the best thing is a rotary switch that would give you various coil combinations between the screw and slug coils on each PU. ArtieToo's 'coil swap mod' would be one of them.

Re: help me decide which guitar to get next

There's a guitar book where the Rev Horton Heat (a.k.a Jim Heath) tells the story of finding his Gretsch in a shop in Montreal with TVJones pickups. He then used it on "Full Custom Gospel Sound Of ..." which is an achingly beautiful tone, so... Hold.. My eyes are watering...

Re: help me decide which guitar to get next

I love my TV Jones Classic humbucker. Expensive on my side of the Atlantic but worth it.

Re: help me decide which guitar to get next

I don't know...the 355 looks baller...but the Gretsch has that little something something.

My suggestion?

Epiphone + English Mount Rings + TV Jones

Baller with a little something something on top.

Re: help me decide which guitar to get next

I thought about getting the new epiphone ES 345, but the varitone and two outputs kinda put me off. i have no idea what i'd ever use seperate outputs for my neck pickup and bridge pickup for. plus the headstock isn't as nice, the binding isn't as nice and i prefer block inlays to split inlays. still a nice guitar though but i prefer the 335. oh it also comes in alpine white :D lol
