k guys, i've got awile to decide still.. but in about 1 year is my absolute deadline but the sooner the better... which paul do i want for my graduation present? i like either neck but have really been craving a baseball bat... at first i was thinking a black beauty then i was thinking a 57' gold top and now i just dont know... it cant really be more than around what those cost new..around $3100? ... if it could be more i'd get a custom shop 59' reissue but those things are about $2000 over my price range new.... im not really feeling anything with p-90's or minis.. nothing against them, i do like them, just not what im looking for at the time .... so gimme your input what paul do you guys like or what pual might i like? hit me back asap... thanks!

you can get a 57, 58 or 57 Black Beauty on Ebay for no more than $2500. i have seen 59's for as low as $3400. i paid $3800 for my 2005 brand new on Ebay. Paid $2500 for my 54 Custom used, but it is kinda rare. They haven't made it for a few years. You have lots of options if you can spend in the $3k range.

R7/R8 are the best values.

If ya need flame go R9, but personally I don't like the R9 neck shape at all and prefer the R7/8 baseball bats (I wouldn't call the R9 a baseball bat..its more like...the hull of a Missouri class battleship).

EDIT: I should note that all the necks vary a bit even from the same guit to the same guit e.g from R7 to R7....I'm speaking generally though...

During a year's time your mind is going to change a million times. Next month you'll want a Strat, then Les Paul, then a Tele, then something else. Trust me on this.

But to answer your question, the Pauls I like are the Customs and Historics. That's it. Oh, and I do have a thing for very inexpensive yet good playing Pauls, like my Epi Standard Plus. ;)

You know...one is NEVER enough. It just starts that way...So don't limit yourself from the get-go! Just get a good one, and go from there.

The most important thing is to determine what LP neck profile you like.
I like the regular 50's 59 profile neck that comes on Stds and Premium Plusses.
I don't care for the slim 60's, and as much as I like beefy necks, the reissue boatnecks don't feel fast enough for me. For that reason, the Std Prem Plus 50's is a better guitar for me than an R7/R8/R9.

First, find out what neck profile you like the most, then figure out which model you want, then try and locate a new/used one for hundreds cheaper than Gibson's retail price. Let the blues lawyers absorb the depreciation, then take it off their hands for $1600. Don't worry about the Gibson QC reputation.....a $25 setup is usually all they ever need. Gibsons have terrible setups from the factory, but once they're dialed in, they're great.

I personally prefer the Customs. They have a richer, deeper tone, and are great for anything really. On the other hand, if you get a Black Beauty, you are missing out on some of the gorgeous finishes the other LPs have. I myself am craving something like an R8 at the moment.

I never saw this when I first posted, but I give it a big +1. I had a Strat ordered at my local guitar shop, and just they guys were pricing it up, I nearly had a horrible change of heart and asked for an Epi LP Custom instead. Of course, I did go and but the LP Custom 2 months later when I had the cash ;)

Are you going to College and living in dorms? If so maybe get an Epi Elitist Les Paul Standard Plus, they are Made in Japan. That way you don't stress about having an expensive guitar in your dorm room.

+1 to you seafoamer i've been thinking about that also, the thing is though is i just got a new job and im picking up odd jobs here and there to save up as much money as possible and all.. and i mean absolutly all of my money is bank bound for the little one... it's looking like regardless of what i save im going to have to bite the bullet and get student loans... the reason i can see me getting a guitar for my graduation present is beacause it's going to be the last guitar i get for a long long time... and i know i wont be satisfied with only a jackson and a strat for that time....as far as what i like.. a nice finish is always nice but not needed i like all the neck profiles but i definatly like the beefier 50's neck or boatneck more... im sorta thinking maybe pick a cheaper paul and put some money in the bank for that little one... i was thinking maybe a classic but i don't think i'll be happy with that 60's neck.... if i could find one for sale when it's time an aged to cream custom would probably get me.... i've always loved those... i do know i will most likely stick to a paul though, i've got my strat and i do like teles but it wouldn't get much use... im gunna cheack out some of the ideas here... any more input keep it coming thanks!!
