Help me find a Duncan for my Uberschall!

Hey Everyone,

I have a JB in my guitar now and while I really like the overall vibe of the pickup, but it does not seem to be giving me what I'm looking for...

I have a Maple capped, Mahogany body, S series Ibanez and a Bogner Uberschall.

Distorted, The JB doesn't seem to add the midrange cut to this amp that it really needs. I've heard this guitar and pickup through other amps and they were a better match in the mids, but I'm not giving up the Uber! Also, and this is key... the lows are a bit flubby and not sharp enough when I'm downpicking. Edgier highs won't hurt me either, but it's not essential.

So... what's another option? Duncan Custom, Custom Custom? Here's the other thing... I like the JB on clean sounds alot, it's pretty full and I would like the next pickup to continue with the clean sound goodness.

Thanks!

If you're willing to ditch cleans, a Distortion would be perfect for you. More, tighter lows, less mids, and edgier highs than a JB, but horrible cleans.

If cleans are a must, a Custom should work well.

That's weird too... See, I thought the same thing actually and bought a Distortion first (before the JB), my old teacher had one and I loved his sound, but the Distortion lacks any definition through the Uber! I can't figure that out at all because I was really set on it, but the JB is an improvement from the Distortion in this case.

You probably need a low output pickup then, and in that case a Custom would work great. With such a hi-gain amp, you wouldn't want the pickup overdriving the amp even more.

welcome to the forum
Yeah thru my amp (HR50+XL) the JB cut like hell and the low end get much clearer (compared to the stock ibanez v2). The mid definatly cuts,
i played the custom thru this axe and it get a bit harsh, scooped mids and the low end was overpowered and get a bit "flubby"...
but i think it's the amp pub combo, not the custom himself. maybe with the Überschall (that's the right german spelling, bogner comes from germany) the custom rocks....

maybe Gearjoneser can help you out

btw don't mention the word b0gner to much on this board ;) coz everyone is gasing for one at the moment - just kidding

Re: Help me find a Duncan for my Uberschall!

Thanks for the welcome Marcel! and the good advice! It's definitely the amp pup combo that make it. To my ears and taste, the Duncans mostly sound great. I always seem to hear what the design was intended to do, I just don't have enough amps to keep up .

I'll try the Custom, what about the Custom Custom for metal... any one tried this?

Re: Help me find a Duncan for my Uberschall!

I also think that with that amp you need something with a little lower output. Tighter lows and some more highs would be either the Custom or the C5. The Custom, C5 and CC are all the exact same pickup, but with different magnets. The easiest thing to do would be to buy the Custom, and if you don't like it swap the magnets. A5's and A2's are easy to come by, and for $4 or so you can change the sound of the pup and have 3 in one.

The Custom Custom will do metal fairly well IMO, but tight defined lows are something you won't get out of it. With that Uberschal you should be able to tighten them up though. I know the CC will give you the mids you are looking for.

Annother suggestion a lot of people make for trem equiped guitars is the Blues Trembucker. I'm really jonesing to try one of those. Just something else to confuse the situation! :burnout:

The Blues Trembucker!!! :wow: That's a cool and different option... Thanks!
I'll have to look into how to swap the mags out (I'll search the forum) I guess it's not that hard, but every time I inspect a pickup there never looks like an obvious way to get in there.

I searched an old thread where someone suggested the Seth Lover for this situation (Uberschall)... has any one tried one of these in a high gain amp yet?? I like the sound clips for it alot, but I need trembucker spacing on it...
