Help me find my perfect dream guitar

All,

I've been thinking a lot lately about woods and guitars and pickups, and I'm looking for a combination, but not sure where to start. I hope you don't mind me describing this perfect guitar, if you could help me find it.

First, I would like this thing to be solid body and with two humbuckers. I'm hoping this guitar will be set neck, but if I have to go with Warmoth I know I won't have that, so I don't mind. I'd like this guitar to be a fixed bridge guitar, six strings, etc. Probably want a Les Paul look-alike, but a "soloist" body style (aka Showmaster) is ok too.

Sound is mainly what I'm wanting to find, in terms of wood and pickups. I want the guitar to be extremely well balanced and musical sounding. Wood choice is very important. For example, I find Les Pauls to be lacking in the high end (except the swamp ash special version). Anyways, present bass, tight enough but not ultra-tight. I love mids, but basswood with a '59 has almost too much mids. Basswood is musical to my ear, just would wish it sounded more "woody", i.e. more complex overtones. Ash is very nice to my ears, but doesn't have basswood's smoothed mid range. The sound I want is basically as close to a classical guitar as possible, just in a solid body electric :D Something that is sensitive to my playing, like something you can easily hear differences in pick attack with.

The pickups I'd prefer on this guitar should accentuate that sound. I prefer the neck to sound ultra-clean and ultra-clear. The bridge should be powerful enough for 70s/80s metal with the right pedals/amp, but still clean and clear enough to be useful without effects. So far I have tried the '59, JB, Jazz, PG+, and Alnico II Pro single coil. I wouldn't mind a dual Jazz set, since I no longer own the Hot Rodded ESP.

I'll compare the sound to what I currently own (but remember, I want to add some tonal variety to my stable). The Lite Ash strat is nice, and so is the Showmaster (basswood). The bridge on the showmaster has too much mids (PG+ and basswood). The neck is too boomy (basswood and '59). Both my guitars are useful, and I use them both equally often,. and I love them both. I'd never part with them.

Anyways, I hope this wasn't too much of a long post, but I was just wanting advice as to what I should go with next. I'm also curious about other pickups I've never tried, like even some Filtertron SD copies.

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Sounds like you want a Tele with two humbuckers. Meets all of your criteria. You can even deck them out with Filtertrons (TV Jones).

That's my vote. Most woody/musical guitar (acoustically) in my educated (and exhaustively researched) opinion.

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Limba (or Korina) is very similar to mahogany but more open and a touch brighter, more complex as you put it in your post. That might be a nice option for the body/neck wood.

Which would mean... swamp ash? or alder?

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Sorry for the long responses, basically I just want something, I don't know, different than what I got. I got a showmaster '59/PG+ and a Lite Ash 3xA2Ps. Sets that are tempting to me are filtertrons or gretsch-like, mini humbuckers, and stuff like the Full Shred set.

I dunno. Leave all that up to you. But they're woody, you can put TV Jones in, they are bassy and extremely bright, but not very middy. However, you can add mids with the pups (you can't take mids out of a dark guitar with pups).

Perfect guitar? *Darn* close!

Any specific model? I prefer ultra-clean in the neck, and "almost hot enough for metal" in the bridge (for example, I've long wanted a Jazz neck and a custom-wound 10k jazz bridge)

I've never found Les Pauls to be lacking in high end. Not that I'd really want to steer you in that direction.

You might want to head to a well stocked music store, and start playing guitars till you find the one you're looking for. Sometimes you just need to accidently find the right neck, on the right body, with the right set of pickups.

It's something you'll never find by looking at the specs.

True, but then I'd buy a Swamp Ash special, but I want Duncan humbuckers, and I'd prefer not to have to modify the guitar.

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Finding something that fits 90% of the criteria and then fixing it to be perfect is often easier than finding the perfect thing the first time around...

to me your perfect guitar would have an alder body, maple bolt-onnack with an ebony fretboard, DiMarzio Air Norton neck humbucker and a Full Shred bridge humbucker.

I can hear it in my head. It's beautiful.

EDIT: I just remembered. The pickups have to be pickguard mounted. To my ear that's critical.

LOL well thanks. I might just build it that way instead. I'm wanting to do the Warmoth thing next time. Still, that combination of woods, won't that be rather bright?

Actually, the Tone Wizard likes the Full Shred for the mahogany body / maple fretboard HH guitar for fusion, with the neck recommendation being a Jazz, so the Full Shred set would probably work in this guitar. What do you think?

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

I just picked up an old Ibanez PL1770 which is the wood combo I just described. Alder, to my ear is very balanced with a favour toward the mid frequencies just below centre. The maple/ebony combo brings the mix back to centre.

The Full Shred to my ear isn't uncontrollably bright. It's bright enough to be versatile as it's easier to drop the highs that are there than find a way to add them. One could install philister head screws on the bass side to fatten it a bit too.

I can't stress the Air Norton enough. It is possibly the best neck pickup ever made.

OK but I'm a Seymour Duncan person, so what would you recommend? The Jazz? FS neck?

I don't have a whole lot of experience with Duncan Neck pups. I'm partial to the Alnico II Pro. I have Jazz neck that I've never installed... I've had it since Christmas.

I was just looking at the tone chart and I'm at a loss... I depend on mids in the neck slot and the only SD humbuckers that have$ any the Invader and the Custom Series.

I'd suggest the Custom Custom, and keep it low and away from the strings. That's just an educated guess tho...

EDIT: another thought, the Invader neck model and change to standard sized allen pole screws.

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

I only read the original post but all i could gather from that is that you're not sure WHICH woods or pickups you want, but you want the ones that sound the best. Bro, I think that describes pretty much all of us...hahah!

That's why none of these answers are gonna satisfy you...too many axes out there to choose from. If I were you I'd just start a 'dream guitar fund' and start making weekly trips to your local shops until you either find the axe you're looking for, or you deduce through trial and error what sounds best to you.

Or you could get a Gibson SG like all the cool kids...ha

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Ok, so far, my concept is a Full Shred set, so here are my candidates. All are Warmoth flat-top LP bodies, all would be solid one piece bodies, and all maple is birdseye.

  • Mahogany body w/ maple neck & ebony fretboard
  • Mahogany body w/ mahogany neck & ebony fretboard
  • Alder body w/ maple neck & ebony fretboard

Which one would probably be the best candidate for the Full Shred Set?

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Why are there only ebony options for the fret board? do you like it so much that it's the only thing you wouldn't change?

I can understand not wanting to modify a guitar. Pickup swaps aren't that big a deal though, and I'm not sure if Seymour Duncan's company would have gotten off the ground as an original equipment manufacturer

I had a Full Shred in the bridge position of my Hamer Sunburst. It's from before Hamer started using Duncans, so it had a DiMarzio PAF in the neck position. That was a good match as I recall, so I imagine anything close to a Duncan '59 in the neck position would be a good match for a Full Shred.

I enjoy bolting together parts guitars, but if you want a set neck guitar, avoid that hobby. Set neck guitars are a different beast IMO.

Besides, sometimes it takes a long time to find a neck that resonates at a frequency that's compatible with the body's, and I usually have to rewire them a few times changing things like pot and cap values, and how the tone control circuit is connected.

The worst part is that it always costs a lot more than I was expecting.

Have you tried any USA Hamers?

Pete
