Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Why are there only ebony options for the fret board? do you like it so much that it's the only thing you wouldn't change?

He's come to realize that Ebony is Secksy. ;)

Twin, I would lean toward Maple neck/ebony fretboard. Both Mahogany and Alder should sound great.

I forget if Warmoth use Honduran Mahogany...

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Why are you so set on a Full Shred set? If I were you I would get the guitar the way I want it and then get pups to round it out....much easier and cheaper than changing out necks and such.

Why not with an Alder body and a maple neck and then experiment with pups string etc. to fine tune? There are a lot of great tones to get with that simple combo.

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

I can understand not wanting to modify a guitar. Pickup swaps aren't that big a deal though, and I'm not sure if Seymour Duncan's company would have gotten off the ground as an original equipment manufacturer

I had a Full Shred in the bridge position of my Hamer Sunburst. It's from before Hamer started using Duncans, so it had a DiMarzio PAF in the neck position. That was a good match as I recall, so I imagine anything close to a Duncan '59 in the neck position would be a good match for a Full Shred.

I enjoy bolting together parts guitars, but if you want a set neck guitar, avoid that hobby. Set neck guitars are a different beast IMO.

Besides, sometimes it takes a long time to find a neck that resonates at a frequency that's compatible with the body's, and I usually have to rewire them a few times changing things like pot and cap values, and how the tone control circuit is connected.

The worst part is that it always costs a lot more than I was expecting.

Have you tried any USA Hamers?

Pete

It's mainly because if I modify the guitar, resale value falls through the ceiling. I'm not afraid to modify, I'm afraid to lose money. Granted, it might be unwarranted paranoia due to that ESP I sold. As for the other stuff, I prefer set neck, yes, but can't get that from Warmoth. And yeah, I understand: the worst part IS that it ends up costing more :D I haven't tried any USA Hamers yet, no.

Which, of mahogany and alder body, would sound best though? :D

I just want something different. I actually called MJ about how hot they could wind their filtertron replacement pickups, but somehow I'm too paranoid to try those out, at least yet, because a custom pickup ends up being sold for cheap on eBay, or so it seems, if it's used. Anyways, I just want something different. I've got the research bug :D

Re: Help me find my perfect dream guitar

Let me try to understand... You're worried about messing up the resale value of a Les Paul by changing the pickups (which is something you can easily undo and get the resale value back) but you want to spend $600+ on a Warmoth?

I got news for you bro: Nobody buys used Warmoth guitars. If you're thinking about this guitar as an investment, a custom piece is NOT for you...actually, it IS for you, it's ONLY for you, and so nobody will be wanting to buy it from you...heh.

Besides: the Les Paul formula is tried and true, proven to rock out and sound great time and time again...and you already know of a model that you really like. You'd be saving yourself a lot of time and energy by grabbing a guitar you know you like, and tweaking the electronics to suit your wants.

Take it from somebody who's been there before man...my Warmoth is disassembled in a corner with no electronics to put in it, but my SG gets played daily and I love the stock pickup. It's not like I hate the Warmoth, it's just that I payed a ton of cash for it, spent almost a month and a half painting it and putting it together, and it's GREAT but still not perfect...even tho it's exactly how I ordered it, and I spent so much time setting it all up.

I payed about as much for the Gibson, and it played and sounded great as soon as I got it...and still does.

So get the Les Paul and put the Full Shred set in it? Don't I have to save the stock pickups for if I sell it?

Sure. Keep the original pickups! There seem to be tons of guys selling used Gibson pickups on ebay, and I always kind of wondered why.

About Warmoth, and other parts guitars... they're a big money loser if you try to sell them whole. And you pretty much have to part them out to sell them on ebay, because Fender has people watching ebay, and they'll shut your auction down. I think the deal is that the peghead shapes are copyrighted, or something like that.
