I have A Les paul copy from 76!! "Aria HB" i belive the fretboard is mahagony cause its black.
I play something betwen Tool Metellica and Deftones.
Its important to me to have a good palm mute as well as clariti when playing chords. I don't like some crunchy mids.
It would be nice if you would wisit my bands site. Its http://www.febra.org/

From listening to your clips I'd say you will love the Custom, but since you mentioned you don't like mids: Custom 5 is your ticket
. Good palm mutes and clarity on that one but it's kind of scooped in the mids, shouldn't be a problem in your guitar.
Keep in mind that you need at least some mids to maintain your position in the mix of a band. It sucks to have a great amp and not being able to hear your self good enough.

Not that i dont like the mids i know its important for standing out.
But this humbucker i posess has maximum crunch kind of mids and iwe heard some samples of VH4 on www.diezelamplification.com and it sounds a lot more like the sound id like. I dont mind the scoop alldough i like Tool mids a LOTT.
What would be a little bit rockier humbucker in the mids ???

For what it's worth, Adam Jones from Tool has traditionally used the JB in his Les Pauls (and yours sounds like the fingerboard is Ebony like his) but if I recall correctly, I heard he was using the Duncan Distortion now sometimes too. With the VH-4 and either of those pickups, I'm sure you could cop a good Tool sound.

I like the C-5. It's one of the best sounding humbuckers with my rig, which is also versatile like the Diezel.

Also, you mentioned the JB. Some love the pickup but, since the bottom end isnt very tight at all on it, I feel the palm mutes are lacking in a big way! Thats just my ears though.
Yes, they both do palm mutes almost as good as anything!!! Out of the 2 I like the Custom a tad more but, it depends on the guitar! If its a dark sounding guitar the C5 is GREAT, if its in the middle or brighter, I like the Custom! All in all they are the same pickup, just different magnets. A magnet swap is easy if you would ever want to change it from a Custom to a C5.Desa said:
