Help me get a good 60's tone?

I know a big part of it is in the cranked Marshalls, but are there any pedals that will help me get closer to that Hendrix/Cream/Zep tones? My goal in music is to write songs like they did back then that get a great vintage vibe.

I'll make a recording when I get my Shure mic in to give an idea of where I'm at. I think my Peavey does a pretty good Marshall sound, so I feel that I'm close, but not quite there.

Maybe some type of fuzz pedal? I'm thinking a Fulltone 69 or maybe a Soulbender?

Thanks,
Chris

Check out that yellow distortion/overdrive unit that line 6 puts out. I know, Line 6. I've a/b'd quite a few of the units modeled and they are pretty nuts-on. I now have one unit with four options: TS-808 (I have one and only use this now--you CANNOT tell the difference), Rat (J. Beck), Colorsound Fuzz (Pagey), and Fuzz Face (Jimi). Throw those in front of a Marshall Plexi and you are in classic city!

Oh, and have Trace at Voodoo Amps build you an plexi clone. He did one for me for $600!! A plexi with a master for practicing and one that you can actually crank in a room!

I didn't plan on spending $600 but that plexi clone sounds interesting. Do you have any clips and/or pics?

No clips but I might be able to find some pics somewhere. The thing isn't pretty. Here is a review I wrote for Trace on HC:

I called and told him I wanted a Plexi I could crank at gigs with a master for practicing. I asked him to model it after Pagey's "The Song Remains the Same" live tone. It a is raw and mean tone that is nicely smoothed out by fuzzboxes or od units. With the Fuzz Face you've got you-know-too also. Check out www.VoodooAmps.com & give Trace a call.

Oh. and what do you think of those little 59 pickups? Do you have one in the bridge of a strat? Can you get a decent humbucker tone from them?

Peavey ?? Which model ?

The soulbender is THE thing for that style.

It's a Peavey Ultra series 2x12 amp...all tube.

I found another pedal that seems pretty sweet, too. The Lovepedal Church of Tone 50. Anyone ever played one?

I'm going to contact Trace and see what he can do for me.

I've got 3 options that I'm considering right now.

1) Get a Fender Blues Jr. amp (for portability) and get a nice pedal (either the COT 50, Soulbender, or '69) to put in front of that and my Peavey.

2) Get an amp from Trace. Hevent decided whether to go head and buy an Avatar cab or combo yet.

3) Get a real Marshall 1987x re-issue and Avatar cab and an attenuator.

Which would you do?

Yeah, I have a lil 59 in the bridge of my Squier strat. I think it's a great little pup and I can get good humbucker tones from it. Since my paul hasnt been working lately the Squier has been my number 1 and I'm liking most of the tones from it.

However, along with an amp, I'm also getting either an Epiphone Dot, Casino, or Sheraton. So I'm going to get a Duncan single coil to put in the bridge of the Squier since I don't need another HB guitar anymore. (The new Epi will be my 4th guitar with HB's) I really want a SC in there so I can get all those famous strat tones.

HTH,
Chris

Re: Help me get a good 60's tone?

Ask Trace to make you a 1x12 combo that you can use as a head also. That way, when you get your cab, you can have the option of plugging it in.
Thanks for the info on the '59--I think I'm going to pick one up today. All of my favorite classic strat tones I get from my neck & middle so I doubt I'll miss the s/c.

Re: Help me get a good 60's tone?

Before I talk to Trace I'm going to see how much money I have left. I plan on buying at least one guitar, a bass, and some pups. That might run around 1000. Then I'll only have 600 or less left depending on how much I get from the job.

Good luck with the lil 59!

Do you have a Soulbender? Can it do Hendrix and Cream tones also? I wasn't too impressed with the clips of the SB on their site, but I'm assuming it can get different sounds than that one. I liked the 69's clip much more.

Then I found the Lovepedal COT 50. This seems like a killer pedal.

Re: Help me get a good 60's tone?

I think the Big Muff Pi does a great job of fuzzing it up plus it has a compressor effect which really adds alot of sustain.

Re: Help me get a good 60's tone?

i <3 Muff.

I have a Tech21 Comptortion which is cool for general overdrive duties and when cranked can get a decent, Van Halen-esqu tone (I think the secret there is the compressor). However, I find myself stepping on my Muff a lot. Throw in a Crybaby and you're getting close.

One thing to remember is that many of these guys did NOT use much gain at all. As I recall, some that had the FuzzFace wouldn't even switch it on, but having it in the chain affected tone somewhat. It just seems that we always remember parts being heavier than they actually are. Take Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" for example...that song kicks ASS. I was fooling around with it to work on my string skipping and using a pretty high-gain tone. Put on the CD and I'm fuzzing out all over Jimmy.
