Help me load up my 2x12

I just snagged an empty Avatar 2x12 and I'd like some suggestions on speakers. I'll be running it with an early 70s Traynor YBA-1A. I mostly play Trower/Hendrix stuff, lots of funk, jazz, old school metal/hard rock (Boston, Kansas), blues, and psychadelic stuff. I'm a huge fan of the classic plexi tone - Hendrix and Thin Lizzy come to mind. Just a Strat, LP and a few pedals.

I've been after the Eminence Wizards for a while now based on some reviews and clips...price is a pretty big factor too.

Any help is appreciated!

The Wizards would be a good choice. Maybe a Wizard and a Governor combined too.

My favorite two 12 cabs would have a Celestion Vintage 30 and a G12H30 combined in it.

I like open back cabs, BTW.

The Gov sounds pretty nice! Anyone know where I can find some Wizard clips? I know Eminence.com had some, but it looks like they're doing a site overhaul.

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

A friend of mine had a Wizard + Black Powder in his Mesa 2x12. Best tone I've ever heard from a Dual Recto. Very well-balanced across the EQ spectrum, even at super high gain.

For you, I think I agree with Lew.

A Governor and a Private Jack gets my vote.

A Wizard and a Private Jack would be my second vote. :)

Go to Avatar http://www.avatarspeakers.com/

Up top he's got all his links like guitar cabs, bass cabs, celestion , eminence. Click Eminence.

The first speaker listed is the Red Fang. Click on "detailed specs" in the box to the right of the description. This brings you to the Red Fang description page. To the right is a list of all their speakers. Click on "The Wizard" and when its page comes up, there will be a little blue box to the right, just above the listing of speakers with a link to sound bytes. Got lots of them too.

Enjoy,
Mario

If you're after some breakup (as opposed to something like a 250 watt EV) then Weber might have something you'd dig.

I just mixed in a g12h with a couple of greenbacks and a weber blue dog. The g12h mixes well with both of those. The blue dogs and the greenbacks have outstanding mid response, while the g12h gives the cabinet a little more punch.

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

wizard is just like a 75 watt g12h30, so if you've heard g12h30's, you've heard wizards

and yeah i'd go with 1 gov & 1 wizard

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

Sweet, I can get a new Gov and Wiz for $134 shipped. I think that's what I'll do. Thanks to everyone for your replies!

Now, my Traynor is rated at 90w and needs an 8 ohm load. So, I need 2x 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel, correct? And is there any soldering required?

Yup, You need 2-16 ohms in parallel. If all your wiring is in the cab.? I doubt anything will need solder. I have a Private Jack & Texas Heat in my 2x12. Works good for me.:) I used this combo on Ratherdashing's backing track if you need a sound clip.

Cool. I'm just installing and wiring the speaks, nothing else. Do the wires just clip to the terminals on the speaks and input jack? Sorry, I'm a complete noob at this.

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

you could use 2 8 ohm speakers in series! :)

Hey man when you get it all setup you gotta send me some clips so I know what that amp sounds like all serviced and running good! :) That way I can know what I really missed out on ;)

That would give him 16 ohms. He needs 8 so parallel is the only way to do it with a 2X12 using 16 ohm speakers. :smokin:

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

If you want quality and want to save some cash, you *have* to try the Mojo branded speakers. Their British line is killer!

They have a G12H30, V30 and greenback clone. And, they kill.

Scott's right. My brother Bruce (http://www.missionamps.com) is both an Eminence and a Mojo speaker dealer and both companies make copies of Celestions. Bruce could use either, but he uses the Mojo's in his Aurora amps and they do sound great! Lew

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

The Mojo Celestion clones are still made in the US as far as I know and the prices are pretty good...I have not tried them yet but Bruce speakes very highly of them and Bruce has yet to let me down yet!

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

Only thing I have against the Mojo Celestions is the price. =^/ I can save a cool $40 with an Eminence combo.

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

The new Eminence speakers are getting rave reviews and a lot of guys also like that the power handling on them are so much higher than the speakers they are copies of but I am pretty sure (not positive, as I have not compared them head to head) that the real Celestion is worth the extra $40! Those Mojo speakers look nice but for right around the price that they cost you could get real Celestions from Avatar...just a thought

Re: Help me load up my 2x12

I've got both Mojo British Vintage & Celestion G12H30/Greenback speakers.

I honestly hear no difference.

Now, I got the Mojos thru Bruce & they were around $65.00 each, but I understand they're now more than that (???)... I like the idea that the Mojos are all USA made, so unless you can be assured that the Celestions aren't Chinese, I'd go with Mojo.

That said, I've heard great things about the Eminence line & the price sure is right. I'm not sure why they're that much cheaper, but if the tone is there, who cares:dunno: :D

Keep us posted on what ya' get, how they sound etc etc etc :beerchug:
