Help me replace sd invader in gibson sg!

Hello forum,

A long while back I swapped out stock pickups in a gibson sg standard (mid 90s) for an sd invader and 59n. I love the 59n, it's never leaving that guitar. But, I'd like to replace the invader for a different sd bridge pup.

The stock bridge pickup (490 or 498) was too thin and weak for me. The invader made the guitar sound bigger, fatter, punchier, etc; all of which I like. However, it also made it brittle (especially in the highs), harsh, and fuzzy/dirty/crackly for lack of a better word (too hot?).

I'm looking for a pickup for my sg that will thicken the guitar up, make it bigger, fatter, punchier, etc, but not make it sound brittle, harsh and fuzzy/crackly. I've looked over the forums a good deal and have narrowed things down a bit, but I still don't know what to go with.

I thought the custom would be a good choice, but then I learned it has a ceramic magnet like the invader, so I worry the harsh/brittle/shrill feel might stick around. I guess the best I can come up with is the custom 5, but I don't know if this will be ballsy enough. Altogether, my short list is: custom, custom 5, custom custom, 59 bridge, alt 8. I know the "custom 8" would probably be a great match, but if you recommend that, please also recommend a production pup.

Oh yeah, I play metal, pretty heavy stuff (progressive, neo-classical, melodic death metal, etc), but I want something still warm sounding, not sterile/brittle/you get the point. Here's a link to a sound/band I like (the human abstract, from Nocturne):

Thanks much,

Re: Help me replace sd invader in gibson sg!

I'm guessing if you've got an invader in there that you are open to non-standard looks.....so here's my suggestion:

PATB series.

They deal with heavy distortion really well

They don't have absurd string pull if you put them close to the strings

Note separation is amazing in chords

They do clean-tone way better than anything that will deal with heavy gain.

The PATB1 is probably a middle ground. Its like a Custom but is both cleaner and dirtier....but it runs an Alnico 5 so it won't be harsh.
The PATB2 is the Brootz
The PATB3 is a PAF essentially, but for those with a Floyd looking to sound closer to a LP.

Choose your weapon:rocket:

The most popular bridge PU for SG's here are C8's, (a Custom, CC, or C5 with an A8 magnet). Warmth and mids, with high output, firm bass. Everything you want in an SG. Swapping mags takes 10 minutes. Do it and enjoy the results.

Re: Help me replace sd invader in gibson sg!

Thanks all!

I have never actually heard of the PATB series so I'll look into it.

Could folks give me a subjective/sonic comparison between the alt 8 and the custom 8?

Blueman: I have an idea, potentially; buy the best custom for my needs, install it and if I don't like it, do the mag swap. Given what I'm looking for in my post, which Custom should I buy/try? I'm leaning towards the Custom 5, but not based on anything but descriptions.

Thanks!
Jim

+1 on the ALT8 .

in my opinion its better than the C8 . but most will disagree . through my amp ,in my guitar it sounds better anyway

Re: Help me replace sd invader in gibson sg!

Call me crazy, but I really like the DiMarzio Air Zone in my SG.

Re: Help me replace sd invader in gibson sg!

I could see liking a Tone or Air Zone in an SG. Thick pickup to offset the thin guitar body. That's one approach, trying to fill in the guitar's weaknesses.

Trying to emphasize the strengths works better for others. If it's a particularly alive piece of wood, getting pickups that emphasize that, even if they aren't as beefy, can be more important.

Custom 8 seems to be a good compromise, fills in the depth but is still extremely responsive, punchy and open feeling. Still lets the wood speak, rather than mostly imposing it's own sound.
