Help me rewire my PRS H/S/H...my tech botched it! Need a wiring super genious!!!

Re: Help me rewire my PRS H/S/H...my tech botched it! Need a wiring super genious!!!

Hmmm . . . that sounds like a bad ground on the bridge volume control. I notice that you have it go to the back of the neck volume pot, but does the back of that pot go to ground? The back of the neck pot and the right-most terminal of the neck pot should be shorted together. Are they?

(Right-most as shown in your diagram. The thin black line that goes to the middle terminal of the switch.)

This schematic should give you this:

p/p up (error corrected on 25th march 2006)

1)full humbucker neck
2)both humbuckers, full on
3)Bridge humbucker

p/p down

1)split neck h/b
2)split neck + VR
3)full HB

I've deleted the switch from the schematic because it complicates it and you only need to remember that each output wire from the pots goes to each contact terminal and the output wire comes from the common terminal to the output jack.

I would proceed in this way;

Install all the components and run wires between all the pot casings, switch frame and ground terminals on the socket. Make the earth connections between the track terminals and pot casings.

If you are working with single core lapped screen cable or braided screen cable it's often assumed that the screen must be connected to earth at both ends but provided that you have a continuous earth connection the cable screen only needs to be grounded at one end. This can make things a little easier because it reduces the number of earth connections you have to make and the integrity of the screen can be mantained to within a couple of millimetres of the core wire's connection.

One unknown quantity in the above schematic is the relative polarity of the VR to the other two pickups. All pickups should display the same "pulse polarity" when tapped. The best way to achieve this would be to set the relative polarity of the two humbuckers first, then adjust the polarity of the middle pickup to match them.

Do you mean to the trem claw for string grounding? Yes.

Yup. There's also another line going from there to the center of the 3-way switch.

OctaveDoc - That's exactly the switching I want! Is there any way to get a bigger copy of that schemactic? By the time I blew it up enough to read so I can see it got too fuzzy to see! LOL . Maybe like a 400 or 500x500 pixel version? If it's easier to email you can hit me here --> moose@mooseaudio.net

Thanks!

Something strange going on as I posted that at full size!

I'll e-mail it to you now...

artie (and others with similar expertise), please confirm me on this ...

isnt it correct that the only true 'ground' in the completed electric guitar (AC)circuit is the sleeve of the guitar's output jack? ... so ultimately, the trem claw / bridge / string ground has to be electrically connected to the output sleeve ... same with the "back of pots" / "bare wires from pups" / etc ...

thanks 8veMD ... thought it was worth clarifying explicitely

So, I'm assuming/guessing that the problem here (with my techs wiring) is multiple paths to ground?

Hmmm...

You can't really have too many paths to ground, but they must all ultimately link to the ground pin on the output jack.

The symptoms you describe sound more as though there is a bad contact between the end of the pot tracks and the ground circuit ( you see I'm getting the hang of saying ground instead of earth!)

I believe Artie highlighted this as a possible cause as well.
