Help me tonewise, MIA strat w/CC or an EPI Custom or PRS SE Custom Question.

Would selling my MIA Strat and buying a top of the line Epiphone Les Paul Custom or a PRS SE Single cut custom be a good idea? I want a dual humbucker, mahogany, ect guitar again, but I'm worried I'd be down grading too much. I like the Strat with a CC, but for some reason I think I'd be happier with one of these other guitars. For reference-

My main question is this: Am I downgrading too much that I wont be happy or is it more likely that I'll like one of the cheaper guitars better because of the difference in construction? I'd really like to hear your comments.:fing2:

Look for a used USA Hamer. It'll blow away the PRS or Epi. ;)

I played a load of Epi LPs against various PRS SEs recently, and the SEs are a clear winner. Better materials, pups, hardware, better... well, everything really. So I bought one!

Id go with the PRS. If you are worried about downgrading just play some in the shop and properly check them out and decide for yourself that it is worth it. I can imagine the Epiphone being a big downgrade from the strat, but there are the few good ones out there. Still, id say PRS. Or DEAN!!!

PRS hands down.

Played a Santana SE and it was real good.

I prefer my SE Soapbar to ANY Fender, MIA or otherwise. Some are better than others, but most Strats are just pricey, prosaic guitars. If you want a really good strat-type, look to the likes of Levinson and similar.

Get a mahogany bodied strat.

Aka a PRS?! ;)
Nope. Different scale length and routing, usually. I consider PRS a true hybrid of the Strat and LP.

Id definitely keep the strat dude...or like someone else suggested go get a hammer...wouldnt get an epi or prs SE over an american strat.

I would.

After all, what's so special about an American Strat - apart from it isn't made in Mexico or Korea or wherever? Not much last time I played one. They vary a lot in quality w.r.t. woods, but overall, at best they are only serviceable axes compared to what the competition can now offer; they are comfy and reliable, but that's all.

Oh well tahts just what id do, but id get a good hammer over any of them :D

The construction in the SE's are really top-notch (mahogany everything).

The only problem with them is that IMO they give them lower-grade hardware, and that's the only thing holding them back.

Plus, the 25' fretboard works great too.

Re: Help me tonewise, MIA strat w/CC or an EPI Custom or PRS SE Custom Question.

I'd Keep the strat, getting either would be taking a step back. It's worth almost twice as much as the PRS or Epi.
I'd get one of the two as a 2nd guitar to play around with.

Re: Help me tonewise, MIA strat w/CC or an EPI Custom or PRS SE Custom Question.

I think he's bored with the Strat.:24:

If the Strat is worth that much money, you could probably get both guitars.

Having two guitars or more is always nice.

(Two guitars with two different sounds, that is).

Re: Help me tonewise, MIA strat w/CC or an EPI Custom or PRS SE Custom Question.

Now I'm really torn, I played my other guitarist's Hamer (not sure what model, but he got it from ebay for about $350) though my Mesa last night and it was really muddy sounding, even the bridge. Just a ton of lows and not much definition. Maybe his guitar is out of wack or something, but we played it through a JCM 800 and it sounded ok (just not my sound).

And Yeah, Thu_Slice, I think I'm just board of the strat. I really miss the scale of the Les Paul I had, so that another reason I'm wanting a shorter scale guitar.

Will the SE be thinner, more cutting than the Epi or a Hamer? How much different will the PRS SE sound then the Strat if I put the CC in the SE when I get it?

Re: Help me tonewise, MIA strat w/CC or an EPI Custom or PRS SE Custom Question.

Naps, something is definately wrong with that Hamer. Mine is tight, bright and aggressive. Is it a USA model, or is Korean?
