Help me troubleshoot/diagnose this amp problem

A while back I installed a Celestion vintage 30 in my tube combo. It dramatically improved the tone of the amp, especially at high volumes. Anyway, when I installed it I weatherstripped the inside lip of the speaker mount and did the same with the back panel of the amp because it rattled a bit.

I'm noticing when the amp is played, especially when clean, there is a "glass rattle" sound. It sounds almost like the vintage 30 is rattling the tubes with a resonant frequency. Anyone else ever experience anything like this, or know how to fix it? I'm assuming a resonant frequency rattling the tubes like hell when the amp is being pushed is probably real bad for the tubes.

Ah it's not that bad. The amp is great, I love it. This is a relatively minor problem. I think it just might be a thing vintage 30's do. My Legacy head does the same thing when I checked when it's on top of the v30 loaded cab, not to the same degree though.

My guess is that the V30 is more efficient than your old speaker and it's shaking the cab enough to rattle the tubes.

When I noticed my tubes rattling a bit after retubing my amp, I emailed Bob at Eurotubes (as the new tubes were bought from him) to see what I could do to fix it. He said tube rattle is just something you have to live with, and that's why extension cabinets or simply setting the head somewhere else are practices used when recording. There are some devices being developed that actually slip onto tubes to help keep the rattling down, but none have it down to an art yet.

I´d have to see it, sorry....and even then I couldn´t guarantee that I could do much, my specialty is guitars....

Tube rattle is common with combo's. The worst amp I've heard is the Classic 30. Someone made up a tube bracket to get rid of the rattle. Sounds like you need something similar for your amp...

Yep, it's a matter of luck. I have the same problem with both my Classisc 30s and had it with my Marshall 50 combo till I took the guts out and stuck it on top for an in-yer-face naked amp look with extra skin burn capability when you're pissed.

it's got a foam padded cage for the power tubes which is REALLY snug when it's on. As for the pre tubes, they just have those spring loaded metal covers that screw on. Most likely that's where it's coming from.

I can live with it. It doesn't come through the mics in the studio when I record it, much to my surprise.
