A good fuzz pedal cleans up so well you can leave it on all the time though and just roll your volume knob back. Jimi did this quite often.
You have to remember as well that when the first fuzz boxes hit the market, we didn't have thousands of OD/Distortions like we do today. The fuzz box was the means to drive the amp harder much like using an OD pedal today. Different tone as its a fuzz obviously, but the tone was a bit of need and not of want, if that makes sense.
Today with high gain amps, tons of drive options etc, we don't need a fuzz as a boost and have probably 20 or 30 clean boost on the market alone, so it makes our application for a fuzz a bit different.
To really get the most out of a fuzz you need to run it into a amp nearing breakup and use the fuzz to take things over the top. Thats where the magical tones lie
