Help me upgrade my guitar!

Hi guys,
Just want to change my pups in my new guitar (alder body/maple neck/rosewood fingerboard/locking trem/H-S-S). Please give me some suggestions to "metalize" my baby! :headbang: Don't think that the tone wizard is too accurate. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanx
Mike

Duncan Distortion for the bridge. I'm not familar with the SD single coil pickups so someone else will have to speak up about that.

Re: Help me upgrade my guitar!

For metal, I'd go with Custom, Distortion, or PATB Distortion Trembucker. As for neck and middle, I'd go with a pair of Cool Rails. They will be fatter and hotter than a normal single, which will help balance with the bridge pickup.

Re: Help me upgrade my guitar!

PATB Distortion Trembucker, chunkier so the alder/maple combo will brighten up less. Incredible output so you can't go wrong for metal with this baby. Harmonics flying, great picking response if it's anything like the normal Distortion, a real Trash Metal pick up. I'd normally say Custom, but since I've been reading a few complaints about the Custom not having enough output it may be slightly disappointing

Hot Rails middle, I think you just have to get something that cleans up well in the neck. This baby also packs fire and will get you fatter melodic distortion compared to the bridge. It'll be less singing and it'll have less upper midrange, but you'll be getting an explosive sound when used together.

Lil' '59 neck, something to cool down, but not too much. This thing is warm, but not exactly hot, it'll make up with it's clean ups though. It's also very responsive to your playing

I've got a Distortion/Cool Rails/Hot Rails set in my Charvel 650xl (maple neck thru, poplar sides, rosewood fretboard, Schaller locking Floyd). There is none more metal.

I was thinking about that kind of setup too.

Thanx guys. I've tried a TB-4 in the bridge but sounds too bright for my ears. Very versatile though, but sounds totaly different in my LP clone  . The fact is that I don't have a killer amp and so I can't tell this is "the real sound". So anyone tried a DD or Custom in an alder/maple guitar? How it sounds like? Punchy, killer harmonics, good PM?

custom in bridge

and cool rails in middle

There are almost infinite options in the bridge, DiMarzio distortion, Duncan distortion, custom, JB......
As for middle and neck, id go with HOT rails in the middle because it creates excellent clean tones when paired with either other pickup. Neck, i would say hot rails, but you can get that from yoru middle pickup, so I would go with a lil screamin demon or JB Jr.

Re: Help me upgrade my guitar!

You could always try an EMG 89 in the bridge and pair of SA single coils, great combination for metal

Re: Help me upgrade my guitar!

The Tone Wizard is just a starting point. But even in reading your post, there's really not enough information to make a 100% totally accurate recommendation, e.g., the type of amp you play through, the weight of the guitar, the gauge strings, the artists whose tone you like, etc.; but based on what you've given us to go on, I like the TB-14 Custom 5 or the TB-5 Custom Trembucker for the bridge. For the neck and middle, Cool Rails or Little '59s would be nice.

Another cool solution would be a full Parallel Axis setup with a PATB-2b Parallel Axis Distortion Trembucker in the bridge and two PASTK-1n Parallel Axis Stacks in the neck and middle. Now that's what I called "metalized."

I hope that helps.
