Help... Mesa problem

Hey guys..

I have a 2x12 Mesa Tremoverb combo. Everything has been great and I love the amp. I have 2 6l6's and 1 of the rec tubes pulled to cut the power down to 50 watts.

When I turned the amp on this evening i noticed that when I play anything aggessive on the dirty channel, I get a flat speaker sound (the fart in a bath tube effect). At first i though it was the guitar I was using so I grabbed another one to be sure, no luck. I checked the tubes in the back and everything seems normal. Then I switched the dirty channel so diode. Still the same.

Does this sounds like one of the speakers is blown to you guys? If so, whats the proper way to test the amp with one speaker at a time to be sure which is which?

Thanks guys,
-Joe

Re: Help... Mesa problem

you will never have such a problem with Marshall Major, I advise you to switch.

Re: Help... Mesa problem

I bet he was kidding, but anyway, have you tried using the other tubes? They are obviously a quad, so switch them out. Then if its a speaker, stick your head down there and see if its coming from one or the other.

Re: Help... Mesa problem

It sounds like your power tubes are shot. Replace them.

This is where I would start......Did you check with Mesa as to which ohmage you should run the amp at? I used to play one of those amps at 50 watts as you do and I'm quite sure you have to plug the speaker into a different speaker out for the 50 watt power.

Re: Help... Mesa problem

Hey buddy. Tried the same thing when I had the amp with similar results. I put all the tubes back in and it worked fine. I agree with checking with Mesa, if you haven't already. Man I miss that amp!

Re: Help... Mesa problem

Hey guys thanks for the advice. Im going to check the power tubes out today as i have spares.

Hey Jeff.. Im going to call mesa a little later on to be sure but you say switching the tubes worked for you before?

Thanks

Re: Help... Mesa problem

Well it worked, but I got a similar thuddy sound like you described. Yours may be worse however, because mine didn't sound like a "fart in a bathtub", just unresponsive and labored sounding. It went back to normal once I put the two tubes back in. Hope you figure it out!

Re: Help... Mesa problem

Ok here's the verdict.

-Tried swapping out the power tubes. Didn't get any change.
-Listened to the speakers individually. Both sounded the same.
-Turned the clean channel down low and found i got the same problem.
-Problem worsens as the volume goes down (i.e. volume all the way down sounds like a blown speaker)
-Higher volumes cure the problem

Could this point to the 12ax7's? I've got 4 spare laying around, i was going to try it out tonight.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Call Mesa and talk to one of the techs...I'm sure they will help you out quickly.

Re: Help... Mesa problem

When you pull a set of power tubes and 1 rectifier tube, you then need to run your cabinet in the next lower ohm jack. So, if you were running your cab/speakers at 16 ohms, you now run them in the 8 ohm jack..... 8 ohm speakers would now be ran out of the 4 ohm jack.

I have 2 16 ohm speakers running into 4 ohm.

I will call mesa later on tonight. I've talked to them before i pulled to power to 50 to be sure it was done right. Nice guys over there
