Help! My Sunn model T stinks (burning smell)...

The old bastard is starting to stink! The electrical odor is not one of prolonged heat, but 90% of what an old flourescent fixture ballast smells like, when it is past its prime. It smells acrid and thick, and emanates immediately as soon as the volume is dialed up on the master volume.

My hope, it is the prob is in the power supply caps...not a transformer. There is one, really large paper-wrapped cap in the power supply (I'm guessing this is the cap most power supplies have...and is common to both the HOT and GROUND). I do not know at this point.

All advice appeciated.

Can you run the amp with the chassis out to see if you can find the source of the smell Sludge?

Are you sure that the tubes aren't overheating?

Are we talking about just smell without added heat?

I could run the amp outside the chassis, and create seperate "stink zones" (cardboard chambers) if needed. The stench is really thick, and tar smelling.

I am not sure stink chambers are warranted yet. (Did you copyright that?)

I just think you may be able to see something if you run the amp with the chassis out. If the smell is thick, really thick, I would be ready to hit the power switch quick.

Running the amp may not be warranted as you may see something wrong in the chassis with the when you get it out, before you turn the amp on. If the smell is that strong, I am betting you will see something.

If you don't see something right off. A tech may be the safest route.
