help needed: decididing new axe

Davey

Goliath of Tone
this has been goin with me for quite some time.. still havent got the money for it (not untill i sell the gear i got now) but reading around here, got me thinking. should i go with a floyd guitar (Jackson DX10D (amber sunb or trans red.. not the actual one, this one has an active midboost.. but maybe this one too, who knows) or a Rhoads type) or a string through tuneomatic (Jackson KVX10 (amber sunburst) )

i would like to have a floyd axe so i could use and abuse the floyd and i think it would kind of suit me, plus add a bit of 'depth' and variation to my playing, but reading around the forums about peoples prolems with their floyds, i kind of fear having one :crying: cos i just cant leave my hands off of stuf and i start tinkering with it and the set-up and i fear that i wont be able to set it up properly again (and no, i aint taking it to the shop cos i dont trust them more than i can throw them), so should i face my fears and get it anyway and try to set it up properly myself if i screw up something or should i go the easy way and get the king V? (being floating or no doesnt bother me as i can always block it)

i dont quite know yet which pup i'll be going for either (bridge.. it'll get a '59 in the neck definately) deciding between the SH-4, 5 or 6 (playing 80's rock and metal, plunging deeper and deeper into more extreme types of metal nowadays)

thanks for any views on this guys

Re: help needed: decididing new axe

get the floyd definitely

you'll be pissed the first few times you change strings but after that you'll be okay. im so glad i got my floyd guitar. so much more yopu can do with it too.
as for pickups, go for a distortion. you'll be happy you did :D

Re: help needed: decididing new axe

Go floyd.

I garuntee a few months down the line you'll never use a trem again :D

Actually its up to you, if you're gonna use the floyd, get it. Nothing works like one. If you're not gonna use it, nothing p1sses you off like one. Im sure i've said that before too

I don't use any kind of trem nowadays because of the amount of altered tunings I use, a floating floyd would just be a waste to me, + your tone suffers a lot.

Backrouted floyds seem to take the energy out of your playing when they vibrate when you pick hard too...

that said, if your gonna use it, get it!

well. if it's blocked i doubt it takes that much of your attack. i dont know how much your tone will suffer cos of it though.. i doubt it's THAT much. i used to me a hard picker, but not anymore
and duh, if i get it of course i'll use it silly.. i'll make vai say man, i wish i did that with my floyd

Re: help needed: decididing new axe

I'd say get the floyd u know the V's gonna piss you off cos u can't sit down. If you don't like the floyd after a while you could change it. Pickup has to be an SH-5 but i would say that cos i've got 1 and it's the only decent pickup i've got but it is nice, very nice I also play the same sort of stuff

Re: help needed: decididing new axe

I used to own an ESP/LTD M-300 (dicontinued model) with a floyd but I sold it and got a hartdtail because the floyd gave me to many problems. I loved that guitar but I couldnt stand the floyd. It basically looked like the Kirk Hammett KH-2 with the reverse headstock, it was transparent black, with neck through body construction. If it wasn't for the floyd Id still have that guitar. Restringing that guitar was so frusterating because no matter how tight the bridge string clamp was the string just slipped out of the bridge string clamp causing the string to flatten. :yell: Everytime it did that Id have to cut the flattened string end off and redo it. During the time I owned the guitar I took it to a music store and had them restring it because I didnt have the patience. :smack:

Yep, the V's and the explorers are both stand up guitars for sure. I played an explorer before sitting down and the rear of the body is to bulky and got in the way. :smack:

Floyds are tricky, I wouldnt recomend one unless you REALLY know how to adjust one, you are willing to take it to the shop (which you do not want to do), or if you know you are going to use the hell out of it.

+1. Couldn't agree more.

Re: help needed: decididing new axe

If its not backrouted its much better

If it is though, a lot of your playing energy appears to evapourate when you hit the strings...

Re: help needed: decididing new axe

I like a Floyd that is recessed but, it has to be blocked from moving backward also. The reason I like them is because the neck dosent have to be angled.

Re: help needed: decididing new axe

blocking the floyd aint that hard.. and when (if ever) Zerb releases his floyd guide, i think i could tinker with it without causing too many problems..
we'll see how i feel about it when the time comes
