Mojo's Minions
Re: Help please with my search for the holy grale
Okay, quick magnet lesson:
- Loosen strings (no need to cut them). Unscrew the PU from the guitar (4 screws in the PU ring). Take PU out of plastic PU ring (2 long screws with springs). Set an old towel or washcloth on guitar, and set the PU on it.
- If the PU is covered, use dremel or exacto knife to the two solder blobs holding the cover on. If you're lucky, sometimes you can pop off the solder blobs with a screwdriver (don't count on being able to do this).
- Loosen the 4 base plate screw about 1/8". Unwrap black tape around coils. Be careful not to jab or injure the wire on the coils.
- The magnet sits between the coils and baseplate. One end of PU will have wires, move those slightly (gently) so that you can use a needlenose pliers or flathead screwdriver to push the magnet out the other end. Be careful not to snap or cut one of these wires! If the magnet is stuck and won't budge, use a blow dryer to loosen the wax.
- When the old mag is out halfway, hold the new one up to it to orient it: ends should repel, sides attract. Remove old mag, put new one in.
- Tighten the 4 base plate screws, and wrap the black tape back on the coils.
- Put on the cover and resolder it; put PU back in ring, and screw ring back in guitar. Tighten strings and retune. Use a string winder and with your right hand, pull the strings tight to prevent slack around the posts.
- Voila! New EQ for your PU. 10 to 15 minutes for the whole thing. Skill level & experience required: none. Low tech all the way. Practice on a cheap Asian first if you want.
