Help: Replacing pickups in a direct mount guitar, screw hole in base plate too small

Hi guys,

Guitar is a Cort G290, HSS. Plays great. Switching pickups from Duncans to Dimarzios. All pickups are direct mount, with long screws that go into the guitar body.

The single coils in neck and middle are OK. However, for the bridge (going JB to Norton), the screws are of a larger diameter than standard-size screw holes on the base plate. This is true not only for the Dimarzio base plate holes, but for the Duncan's also, as I had a spare 59 lying around to compare.

In the photo, the Dimarzio with the padding glued on is on the top, while the Duncan JB with the padding removed is on the bottom. The screw on the lower right points to the hole on the base plate of the JB, which has been widened to fit the screw.

I figure I have 2 options:

1) Exchange base plates, which might alter the tone of the pickup since the Norton appears to have has a brass base plate.
2) Drill the holes wider, which I am anxious about because I would not want to damage the pickup in the process.

Any recommendations?

Thanks
