HELP! sm-1 mini humbucker - slightly mushy on the lower strings

So I finally installed a SM-1 mini-humbucker in the neck position of my tele and so far I'm liking it, BUT the lower strings tend to get slightly mushy sometimes, especially when played clean... is this normal for the SM-1? I've tried playing with pickup height and amp settings as well... but it doesnt really help that much.

ive not found that to be the case. whats the rest of your rig look like?

the rig is just the tele (alder/maple neck) ---> rat pedal ---> prosonic combo.

Ditto. What kind of strings are you using? also, what do you have it paired with at the bridge?

I'm using D'addario guage 10-46 strings, and a SD broadcaster in the bridge.

Are you EQ'ing your amp on the dark side of things to beef up the Broadcaster? If so, that might be part of the problem. I have mine in an ash Tele with a 3 saddle steel bridge paired with a JD lead and it works beutifully.

I had a mini-hum in the neck of an esquire and I loved it. It did sound soupy compared to the stock tele pickup in the bridge though. That's how I liked it because I'd play the bridge PU 90% of the time and turn to the neck for goopy gain. When I switched out my bridge PU for a Little 59 the dark, soft tone I loved on the mini-hum disappeared, and it seemed bright and clangy.

I think Benjy hit the nail on the head - it's not the pickup per se, and your setup doesn't sound like it would tend towards mushiness, it's the contrast between the two pickups. Of course there could just be someting about the tone of that pickup that you just don't like..it happens to everyone, even with great gear.
