I was just checking on my auctions, and these popped up. Man I got GAS from looking at these... I remember someone on here a while ago posting a super cool looking Mango Explorer, and now I had to run into these... Has anyone on here bought a "Bacchus" guitar? I've heard lots of guys having positive experiences buying from Japan, despite the expensive shipping. Wait, why am I looking at more guitars? Does GAS ever end?!

Talk you out of it? No wai! I'd like some myself.

Forum bro Kostas has a mango V - it has some sick figuring.

Re: Help talk me outta this (Bacchus SG/LP in Mango)

if you have been gassing for something for over a year then its worth buying. Otherwise its just impulse.

Re: Help talk me outta this (Bacchus SG/LP in Mango)

I had a Bacchus BFV-58 and it was a badass guitar until it moved on down the line and another owner put a Gibson amp logo on the hs and handraped it on youtube.

I absolutely want BOTH of those guitars.

LP Special type looks pretty tasty.

Really like that LP. Both actually. Awesome color. Looks like the LP didn't take the finish well on a good portion of the back around the cover plate side. Too bad but overlookable if it's a player. I have never seen a Bacchus but I think I've come across them on ebay browsing. I haven't been able to bring myself to buy a guitar, sight unseen, from overseas. The shipping costs help keep me in check too. Hell, I don't like buying guitars sight unseen, period. But that's probably just me. Still, those would tempt me to take the risk if I were looking.

Re: Help talk me outta this (Bacchus SG/LP in Mango)

Those are supposedly Mango wood. I have no idea how Mango wood rates as a tonewood.
Also, from a quick search, not all of their guitars are made in Japan and the ones that I saw that are seem to list in the mid $1000 range and higher. Apparently, they are manufacturing in the Phillipines and China as well.

Re: Help talk me outta this (Bacchus SG/LP in Mango)

The Mango guitars were manufactured in the Philippines. At least the Gibson inspired line, now these are probably discontinued and they have a Fender inspired line from Mango wood. I'm guessing the MIP guitars are their middle line, lower than the MIJ and higher than the MIC. In their announcement the company mentioned they chose Philippines because they have a long tradition of making instruments and they believed with the guidance of Japanese luthiers the result will be great.

We imported essential equipment, such as belt sanders and router bit machinery from Japan, along with our methods and techniques established in the Japanese factories at Headway and Aska. Experienced luthiers from Headway instructed the Philippine luthiers in the manufacturing methods so that necks and bodies are minutely crafted to the same high standard achieved in our Japanese factories.

Mango wood tonally is close to Limba (Korina). The figuring of the wood is (often) similar to black Limba.

The necks judging from mine and a couple others I read online are medium to thick. Mine is a little flatter than I would like but does not mean it's not comfortable. I'm guessing more D than C.

Finish feels good on hand. Tuners work as they should, no need to change. Nut is cut correctly. Pickups probably must be ceramic but the bridge on mine doesn't seem so high (16.5 k) as another guys I read. There are balanced but nothing special. I'll probably try something else in the future.

Personally I found it a clever move from Bacchus. Mango is everywhere in Philippines and I wanted to try it cause all my Limba guitars are great. Mine is definitely a keeper, finding a '58 style V is hard. At that price almost impossible.

Bacchus is fairly known to bassists and to the MIJ guitar experts. Their Japanese guitars are over $1000 new and their ltd models have even higher pricing. The reviews have always been good. Judging from my V, a Japanese Jazz bass I had tried and a couple MIC strats I had heard in a shop they never disappoint. Anyone who's thinking about it should give it a try.
