ok - so i finally got a very rough recording of me playing my ibanez540s ('59 N) into the line6 toneport ux2 (SLO model) and into abletone live lite software over the backing track to 'help the poor'

comments please .. especially tips on improving the recording quality (the guitar playing is likely beyond help :D )

so won't you help poor me :D

thanks for listenin'

Re: help the poor - won't you help poor me ...

i liked it. veryyy short, though. why?

The phrasing seemed a little more sofisticated then the cantaloupe island jam underneath. That one, btw, seemed to have some noticable digital clipping.
'Help the poor' left me wanting more.

Re: help the poor - won't you help poor me ...

I dig it, any chance you can link the backing track? I've always wanted to spend some time jamming to help the poor.

Re: help the poor - won't you help poor me ...

i <3 u 2 foamy :D ... thanks

it took me almost 3 hours to just get THAT much done .. i am REALLY struggling with this s/w ... at this point, i'd have to hit takes REALLY REALLY well to make things longer (and as you can see, even 1 chorus strains the envelope in that regard) ... i think i am going to try another s/w pack that doesnt rely on this 'non-linear' paradigm ... those previous tracks were all recorded very hastily with my soundcard and the windows wav recorder .. no doubt clipping and more

riff - i'll see what i can do about uploading that backing

thanks

Re: help the poor - won't you help poor me ...

This is a personal preference, maybe...

(For some reason, I feel really odd about critiquing you. I would hate for you to take it as something other than constructive criticism, I guess.)

I've always been more enamored of a slower, wider vibrato style. I dig the playing, but I would slow down the vibrato style. That's just me, though.

Re: help the poor - won't you help poor me ...

thanks rob

no need to feel odd critiquing me, friend .. it's all good and i threw it out there for comment ... i am hoping to get tips on the playing/recording/tone/everything from all the more experienced bros (of all ages) on the forum ....

i understand and agree with you actually ... i find that i am in a very unsettled 'headspace' when recording given that i am so consumed with the detail-oriented, technical aspects of operating the software .. i am nowhere near the 'place' where i can really focus on subtleties of my playing like a more controlled vibrato ...

i also think my tone is a bit too fizzy

i need to figure out how to make thoe whole thing louder too

keep em coming

Re: help the poor - won't you help poor me ...

That sounded good t4d. The tone was nice. That took 3 hours? Do you know how to punch in parts on your recording software? If I had to keep going until I nailed parts I'd need to buy a pizza franchise, and a keg filled with Jagermeister. I always keep the good parts and punch out the bad parts- greatly saves time. Also, to prepare to record loop the backing track and just let it play for 30 minutes or so while you practice. Nice work, post some more....

Re: help the poor - won't you help poor me ...

thanks RGN - no, i havent figured out punch in / punch out yet ... i could probably rig up a foot pedal to get that going ... the 'practicing over the loop' bit i DO know how to do and will be able to do more of that too .. i dont even want to think about how it would sound if i was drinking at the same time as trying to think this stuff through :D

thanks rid - yeah, i am looking to get back to sonar instead of this ableton live ... i am sure this is a great product for those who grok the nonlinear thing ... but this old dog still thinks of cutting pieces of tape :D
