Help with 4 single coils guitar (Yamaha Pacifica 904)

I just bought a Yamaha Pacifica 904. You can check it ou here:

The thing is: this is not a single/single/humbucker guitar. It has 4 single coils, being the bridge two singles connected in parallel, giving me the choice of sigle coil tones or humbucker tones.

I never had a guitar with a single coil in the bridge position, but from what I've listen in samples and youtube, this pickup, when in single coil mode, does not sound like a strat bridge pickup: it's thin, cold and twangy. Kind like a tele.

Is there anyting I can do to improve the sound? What pickups can I buy to replace the ones in the bridge? Does it work with regular single coils, or is it necessary special ones?

It depends on what you mean by improve the sound. I found a pic online and it appears that the bridge pickup(s) sit in a mounting ring that is the same shape and size as a humbucker ring.

You could change that pickup for any Seymour Duncan humbucker and wire it to only split in combination with the middle single coil like most other H/S/S guitars.

As for changing to a humbucker... Thanks, but no thanks. I had a s/s/h with ssl1's and a '59 humbucker and never got a convicing single coil tone when splited.

a strat bridge position single coil can be pretty thin, cold and twangy especially if its a vintage style low output alnico V pup

to get humcancelling you need one pup to be rw/rp

If you don't like the sound of traditional split 'buckers, go with a Rio Grande Muy Grande in the bridge along with a pair of their Tallboys in the neck and mid.

What about put a strattier sounding single coil pickup in along with a single coil sized humbucker in the slot and add a mini switch to select either one or both?

Probably means if you were to use 2 replacement single coils in the bridge one of them would have to be reverse wound-reverse polarity in order to cancel hum when used with the other one. Yes/no?
