Help with Bassline pickups and tone circuit...

Hello,
I wanted to ask for some info as i couldnt find it on this page.
I just bought Fender P bass (1977) with SD Bassline pickups and Active 3 band tone circuit.
I just cant understand why its called active? There is no battery? Or is it hidden under the pickguard?

Can anyone help me with this?
